Through the Lens of an Artist

Deanne downy woodpecker Back in 1962/64 when Deanne was 10 years old she moved with her family to Chincoteague, Virginia. On a nearby island there was a Wildlife Refuge with a herd of wild ponies. She became intrigued with horses and sketched them in pencil and charcoal and has been drawing ever since.

She took painting lessons in 1982 and by 1986 she earned her certificate and joined the ranks of the Society of Decorative Painters of which there are around 25,000 members. By 1991 she had achieved her Master Decorative Artists certification. She began travelling and teaching painting at Seminars both in the United States and overseas. She has been to Australia several times and made some really good friendships but presently she is concentrating more on writing instruction books and pattern packets as the constant travel became very gruelling. Deanne came to GB’s through the recommendation of a friend and she was overwhelmed by the welcomes and friendship that she received. Many of us have come to know her through her beautiful art work but it is only of recent times that she has taken part in Feathered Friends Gallery.

When she first joined up she visited FF to look in awe at the various photos and it awakened inspiration in her to try her hand at bird photography. She had tried before but felt that the results were poor. There was a thread last fall all about digiscoping and that is what encouraged her to get together some new equipment and accept the challenge which she describes as one of the more difficult she has faced but intriquing and satisfying. In Deanne’s own words “When taking pictures of flowers you have the luxury of waiting for the correct light, experimenting with different lighting situations throughout the day and if you do studio photography then the options are endless. With the birds, getting a really good photograph is a matter of lots and lots of time, lots and lots of patience and then add a good dose of luck to it. I have developed a very healthy respect for what it takes to get a lovely photo of a bird.” Deanne male cardinal

Deanne and her husband live in Nashua, New Hampshire which is the city where she was born and have one daughter who lives nearby and takes care of her website business for her. They have 1/3 acre lot where for the last 20 years she has been tending a large 20 x 40ft. perennial terraced border which is her passion as well as several other smaller garden beds. They have several bird houses and baths and also a large ornamental pond which has encouraged more birds to visit. They have had Chickadees and Wrens nest and raise their young successfully.

In the past she has gone on some major birding trips with a very dear friend who is an amateur ornithologist and a very well known bird artist. They took trips to Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Idaho, Bosque del Apache in New Mexico and Cave Creek Canyon in Arizona. One memorable experience was seeing tens of thousands of Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes in Bosque but her biggest lifetime birding thrill so far was seeing the Whooping Cranes amongst a flock of Sandhill Cranes in flight and the pristine white of the Whoopers was something she will never forget. With her renewed enthusiasm and her new equipment she has begun taking some day trips in search of new birds to photograph. On her agenda is the Great Bay NH area where she hopes to see plenty of shore birds. Her DH reminded her that he got his birding merit badge when he was in the Boy Scouts but Deanne has designated him to the status of ‘driver’ when they go on a photography birding trip. She can see this new hobby eating up way too much of her time but says that her and Doug plan on having a great time together pursuing her new interest. Doug is happy and interested in observing the birds more than photographing them.

Just recently Deanne got photographs of the Common Eiders which are a winter visitor and she described that experience as wonderfully exciting. Her favourite bird is the White Breasted Nuthatch which is such a cheerful little thing with it’s chuckling sound and always brings a smile to her face. Deanne whitebreasted nuthatch

Deanne would like to give thanks to all the Feathered Buddies who have been so forthcoming with information and advice which she found invaluable and much appreciated.

We would like you to know how much appreciated you are Deanne for sharing your wonderful photographs which are a real inspiration to each of us. We can all learn a little bit from each other and that’s what Buddies is all about.
