Deb’s Garden

Combining gardening with a young family is always a challenge, especially when you live in an apartment. Deb enjoyed her little patch of garden with alyssum until she and DH Mitch bought and settled into a house and daughter Avery was past the baby stage.

The garden was neglected when they took over three and a half years ago, and a non-gardening friend helped clean it out. Deb fears she may have lost some perennials during this clean up as she didn’t know any better, but she is having fun filling the garden with her own choices. There were existing perimeter raised beds, shrubs such as spirea, a beautiful pink hydrangea, purple sandcherry and some peonies and brunnera macrophylla at the back. There are several shade trees and the backyard is mostly sun.

Two fairly large beds have been added so far and some flagstone paths. Three quarters of an acre means plenty of scope for future beds. There are perimeter gardens that go around the entire house, and island bed in the back under poplars and a small bed around some rock camouflaging the well. A new bed is at the end of the driveway and there are plantings around the light standard, mailbos and shed. Bulbs are planted at the base of many of the trees and there are containers here and there.

Mitch provides moral and physical support and really enjoys the garden too. He will dig new beds and water sometimes and help with the hardscaping. Deb says she doesn’t mind the heavy work, but he is helpful and also never makes her feel that she spends too much time gardening!

Deb made a little water feature last year in her shady corner, and in front of it is a circular flagstone area in the grass. A cedar hedge for the back along the property line is another project she hopes to complete in the coming season, together with a long garden between hers and her neighbor’s driveways.

Hummingbirds and orioles visit the garden, and a swallow nests in the doorway each year. Because the lake is near there are martins and (too many) skunks.

Favorite plants of Deb’s are hydrangeas, peonies – for their outstanding foliage and height as well as the flowers – clematis, brunnera macrophylla with its heart shaped leaves and blue flowers, delphiniums and rhododendrons. Her most under-rated plants are pink soapwort with its tiny pink flowers and cascading foliage, ajuga Burgundy Glow with its vibrant color and butterfly delphiniums which bloomed all season. Winter sowing was fun for Deb last year, she couldn’t believe how easy and fulfilling it was, and she plans to do some more this season.

The biggest garden influence for Deb has been Gardenbuddies, she has learned so much online and has been inspired. Her mother and MIL enjoy gardening to a degree and Deb is pleased that is something they can now share.

Thank you Deb for sharing your charming garden with us.
