From the farm-

It is December, so here's to color! You'd never know it now, but I have a blue and yellow garden near our back door where I have early blue iris reticulata 'Cantab', pale yellow trollius, an early yellow peony, tall blue delphiniums, 'butter and sugar' iris and a single yellow rose called Golden Wings. One of the highlights of this bed is Baptisia Australis, also called false indigo. This plant was a gift to me and a great success here. Almost a shrub, it is tall with lovely green foliage and three foot spikes of intense blue pea-like blooms. These remind me of lupines. Baptisia is a drought tolerant plant and is a good choice in these dry summers many of us have been experiencing. The plant flowers in June and then later dark almost black seed pods appear which are beautiful as well. A member of the legume family, even the foliage is pea like. It grows in full sun here, but I'm told it does well in partial shade also - in almost any kind of soil. There is a white false indigo which I am trying now and a new hybrid named Purple Smoke which of course boasts dusty purple flowers. Just so you know, I also have a small white clematis 'hexapetala' and clematis 'Durandii' weaving through this bed. Later on, caryopteris 'Dark Knight', yellow digitalis, blue and white campanula and solidaster finish off the season. If I'm lucky, there's a second blooming of the delphiniums
