Sometime back I asked a question about these and I believe Greg gave me some excellent information. Well here one downspout setup, we will be doing this also on the south side of the house.

Karma! That setup looks great. I still have my barrel and need to get off my lazy duff and set it up this year.

Greg, we started off with just the blue one but found if would fill up to fast!!! Do put it up high enough to get at least a bucket up under it. I wanted 6 but DH thinks that is over kill, this is the dry side of the yard. Thank you again for all the information!

I have a water barrel on each side of my house: One to water veggies and flowers and clematis and hostas and I hope a climbing Hydranges; One to water front gardens, shrubs, grasses and flowers. You're right Karma, one barrelful of water doesn't last long. I love having them though - no chemicals, well, none specifically added, and it's free!

Here are an added couple of photos so you can see the fittings we used. Between the two screw together ones is a small piece of PVC pipe, this was recommended for the flow to have a larger pipe. I have more ideas but DH list is getting to long!

Karma, I noticed you added the connecting pipes near the top of the barrels. I was wondering if you think it would work to place these connecting pipes near the bottom. I think I could then place several barrels connected together and have only one spigot on the front most barrel. Then all could fill up and drain from one barrel.

Greg that was my thought too! But this way I can use all the barrels with hoses in many directions as I have several beds to the east. The guys talked me out of just one spigot and I'm sure not going to rock the boat! I had to laugh they are only full to the spigot as I have used that much already! They were also thinking down the road if I get tired of this and they would be easy to resell this way too??

Karma, good point about multiple spouts. If I do more than one barrel, I will probably put more spouts also. However, I still will think about putting the connecting pipes low so I can fill and drain from any one I want. I will just start with one barrel and add more later. I can't wait to get back home and start working on it.

We got rain over night and now 3 of the 4 are filled. DH was shocked and the over drain hole on the blue one was hooked to the new hosta bed area in the back, wow was someone thinking ahead of him.

how's the water flow out of the hose? What if you're standing holding the hose? I would think that the end of the hose would have to be lower than the water level in the barrel.

Zack, those are used with soaker hoses and the over flow is on the the blue barrel which we run to the flower bed off the deck. I can put a water bucket under the spigget to get water if I want to do it that way. We mainly run these up under the big pines to water the back of the Brug garden. That area is aways dry and we figured this was the best way to water that area. Got to love those soaker hoses, they run every where.

How were the spigots attached? What type of spigots did you use?
