I have a seed strain of delphiniums called "bitter chocolate". The flowers are of the basic delphinium colours e.g. blue/lilac/purple/white/pink but they are also coloured with varying degrees of black colouration. I personally only like some of them but they are unusual and I breed them to keep the strain alive. lovers of "black plants" rave about them. What do garden buddies think?

Hmmm. I'd need to see them in the garden and decide how they could be paired with other plants.

Very unusual, but they are attractive. They must be very exciting to flower from seed.

They would look great in the black and white garden I designed back in California. I have just heard that the garden is looking good aside from the fact that Ammi has taken over and the gardener can't bear to pull it out because it is so pretty. My friend Lichen in CA would like them too. He had a black themed garden and loves black plants.

I really love the first one and last one. Frankly, I don't care for the colored ones with black like number 2. I think the black distracts and simply looks like a fading dying flower. But with black and white or very light colors, it is quite attractive. More so because they are not common. I think I would grow these in an all white space to highlight the black.

Like Marie - I'd have to see it in the garden to decide. I do like black flowers and had several black iris. The photos are great but I'd need to "see" this in person to decide. Very unusual.

They are very different! I think I am more traditional, and love the blues, pinks and purples!

We haven't got as many of these as we might have had as I'm not too keen on them - no that that usually stops Mike planting/buying things! I much prefer 'Alice' and the more traditional delphiniums but these certainly make you look twice.

Jackson and Perkins is touting a new black delphinium called 'Darkness Visible'. They list it as hardy to zone 10! Is that possible? Has anyone grown any delphinium (much less a black one) in a climate that warm?

I remember seeing a nearly solid black one the other day, and that one I liked, but the few pictured here I'm not too crazy about...they almost looked mildewed to me. Now, if there was one that was a deep sky blue or dark blue (not purple), I think I'd probably go for those.

Watch this space next spring - I have all colours with varying degrees of black from white through pink, pale blue, pale lilac, blue, dark purple to almost total black and brown. I shall probably be selling seeds from next summer the only thing is you can't guarantee the results from seeds like most ranunculaceae they don't breed true. Here are a few more that I shot earlier. A pale lilac, a blue purple just touched with black and a white that is heavily black. Apologies for picture quality I compressed them twice and couldn't be bothered to go back to the originals and do it again - busy getting new polytunnels erected and sites prepared.
