Delpheniams have taken over.. I need to move or divide. One is lacking because it doesn't have enough space. I was going to transplant and we got this heat spell. they are 2 to 4 years old and what was once a 3 by 8 garden seem only room enough for 2 dels and a bleeding heart. They are about to flower now so I'll have to move later. aNY HINTS ON HOW TO DIVIDE THESE FLOWERS?

Welcome to Garden Buddies, Pat! I just did a google search and came up with this interesting list, which says not to divide Delphiniums.

http://www.taunton.com/finegardening/pages/g00022.asp

I am sure there are some experts here that may say it can be done and perhaps they will post soon. Mike ("Addict") hyridises them so he may have different news for you. Even if it can be done, I think it may be wiser to do it in early fall. About the only things that I have moved mid summer with luck are Daylilies and probably hosta.

Good luck with your project.

True,I cant advise anyone to divide Delphiniums as there is a great risk of infection specialy with the older clumps of 4-5 years old ,nevertheless some people divide them succesfuly(only in early spring when the shoots are about 1-2" long ),this is also the right moment to take cuttings .

good luck with the Delphs!

I have a bed of Delphiniums that I need to move! It is a large bed and my DH says he needs that spot! I do not want to save all of them but . . .I certainly want some of them! Is it possible to transplant them to another spot in my yard without losing them? If so, when should I do this? My only alternative is to move DH and I've gotten quite fond of him after 50 years together!

After moving to MD's Eastern Shore, I miss my delphiniums and wonder if they will grow in part shade six miles inland from the ocean....anyone ever grow them under these conditions?
