I have tried to grow delphiniums without success. The snails and slugs always won. This year I bit the bullet and bought some in gallon containers. This is my first one. They are next to roses that are yellow or apricot in blooms.
This was taken with a new camera that I am trying to learn. Carol

Carol that's a wonderful color and next to your roses the look will be gorgeous. I wish you luck with the new delphinium. What camera did you get?

Arlene, I still am using a point and shoot. I went from a Nikon 3500 to the Canon 610. The Canon is much more complicated. I'll be reading the book for a long time to come. But the picture quality is much better. Thanks Arlene, Susan and Shirley. I just have to keep spraying Liquid Fence to keep the deer away. But I am totally in love. Carol

Carol, lovely. My favorite perennial. Do you know the name of this one? I think the fact that you bought a large plant will help a lot! Liquid Fence here on a regular basis also, although (so far) the deer haven't found my Delphs.

Stargaze, I agree, it is gorgeous and I'm glad I spent the money. Denise, the name is Candle. I used Liquid Fence last night, but I started hanging cds from the roses. I put up Irish Spring soap when I couldn't spray, but the soap melted in all the rain. Carol

Carol, What a beautiful photograph! I just ordered several more delphiniums this afternoon and your picture makes me happy I did so. I had my first success with them purchasing a large plant, too. That gave me some confidence (fortunately I didn't have deer) and I bought my next bunch from Bluestone. They have thrived even though they were small when first planted. Best of luck with your delphs. They're the perfect rose companions. Sue

Susan, you probably have well mannered Wisconsin deer. Mine are an urban of dilenquents. I've seen them in gardens at 3 in the afternoon. No manners, not even a thank you! Sue, if you make it down for Vintage dirt day, you'll have to come over. I just planted two more yesterday. Can't wait to see them blooming. One is a very pale lavender. Planted it near Comtessa du Cayla, a red/yellow China rose. Carol

Carol, I have to say this conversation sent me over the edge. Just placed an order for 16 more delphiniums including a lavender only to log on today and find you did the same. When that one blooms next to CduC, please post a photo. My current delphs have now risen above the irises - it's only April and they're enormous, all at least 2x2. I'll probably see you at Ashdown for the pruning workshop before I get back down to CA. :-))

I suggest that you sit down some where quiet and read the manual for the Canon. I recently got a Canon Ixus 60 and having read the manual am amazed at what it will do! I suspect it is similar to the old Canon I had - I just did not read the manual! The delphiniums look great. I have never had much success with them, but am working on it. They only ever seem to want to grow to about ankle height before they flower!

Reading the manual will be a winter project. I'm not good on directions. SB, I've added more and more. Bought a bunch at Annies Annuals on sale a few weeks ago. Covered them with Sluggo.

Annies started out as a local cottage industry and most gardeners in the area know her or her plants. They are in the better nurseries. I love the fact that she offers older varieties and rare plant material. She started opening her nursery a few years back and I go there a few times a year to pick up plant material. It is always a fun and wonderous experience. Carol
