I have 5 or 6 tree peonies with several flower buds each (not showing color yet, but fully formed). We have a forecast of 29 degrees for Sunday and Monday nights, and I'm wondering if I should attempt to somehow protect these buds or the new growth on the plants. I know they're extremely hardy while dormant, but maybe not so much once dormancy has broken?

I don't think there is any danger of their being damaged by the cold. Mine have buds, too, and are currently being subjected to sudden night freezes after a warm winter. I even found one of them with its stems arched over in the morning. But within an hour or two it was fine again, including the buds. Temperature fluctuations are normal this time of year so they can deal with them.

They will only be damaged if they are exposed to sun first thing in the morning. If they are in that position cover the bush with a large sheet of fleece if possible.

Thanks Mara and Moira (great stage name for a comedy duo!). I appreciate input from two sources I respect so highly from having read many of your previous posts. I don't usually fret about things like this, letting nature take its course, but when one only gets two or three buds per year it would be disheartening to lose them!
