It may be too late for this year, but does anyone have a really successful way of staking the peonies? Maybe we can all learn a thing or two for next year?

If they are mail ordered stakes, can you list your source, please?

I have some in hoops..not very good....but others I just put bamboo stakes and tie with the green wire..almost invisible..but not foolproof. They still bend..But part of their beauty is in their bow to me..Just not as low as they go:(

I will be watching this..Good question!

I use Linkstakes as they come in different heights. Not sure if they are available in the US.

I use twiggy branches. You take branches from trees, brush or shrubs that have allot of smaller branches, strip the leaves from them. Push the larger ends of the branches into the ground and surround the peony with them, intertwining the branches.

Sounds like a great idea!

I've also done the twiggy branches bit when I pruned a big cornus last year and the prunings worked a treat for all sorts of plants - very natural looking and environmentally friendly too!

I build cages of rock around our peonies It works pretty well for us Those have been there a dozen years. They keep the dogs from tromping on the peonies too.
Deb's best friend, Edna, liked it so much she had me build a dozen or so around her regular peonies. Worked great for them too. Just another idea... Deb also grows hens and chicks on the rocks.

Thanks you guys :) They even impress me. Those are 2 of our 3 big clumps of them. Deb has smaller clumps around the yard to give away to friends. She doesn't like disturbing the big clumps every year. There are more pics in our Flowers album.

I thought this thread was long gone.

I really appreciate when some "old" threads resurface again. This is the one I missed! Dave! WOW!

Those are, without fail, the largest Fern Leaf Peonies I have ever seen. How exceptional!

And those rock borders are good looking.

I sometimes wish my garden could more easily incorporate rocks into the effort.....
but I do love my bricks.
And I do have some oddly interesting, and exceptionally big, black "lava rocks" that hail back to the days when I gardened these same beds as a boy.

Good Grief, I just realized I have completely ignored the main subject of this post.

In Oklahoma City, supporting Peonies is a given with the winds we have.
And yet many people don't bother.

I favor "peony cages" I purchased 20-25 years ago. Whenever one part of these cages breaks down I try to fix it, because I treasure gardening tools I have had and used that long....
and am loath to let them go.

Short story......
I designed a border of white peonies into my church project. I suggested on several occasions that they will want to stake the peonies that year....
and they say they will.....
but they always forget......

Here are the results......

Now, that's just sad looking!

I agree John. I have also found that if you don't have the right height the peonies tend to flop over the support and land up breaking or looking just as poorly as those. I am going to experiment with a few types this year to see what is best.

Maybe when it is peony season and you start staking yours, you'll post a picture of those treasured garden tools.

No one uses tomatoe cages for their peonies? I have to laugh at Bruce, for years we used sticks from different trees but they kept rooting and DH said enough trees!

I use peony supports from Lee Valley Tools and I believe they are available through mail order. They are sturdy and adjustable and invisible once the plant has leafed out. It is a big investment - but a one time investment that is in my opinion worth while.

They also have these wonderful adapters from Germany (special clip, green with screw fastener) that fit on stakes and are adjustable that you can attach hoops to for other staking needs.
