It is quite possible to cross a peony and a tree peony. They are being sold for big bucks. We just sold one at the Hardy Plant Society/Mid Atlantic Group plant sale for $90 -and it was a bargain.

The description of the one we had is as follows:
Paeonia 'Kopper Kettle'
Common Name: Itoh Hybrid Peony
Itoh Peonies are rare and unusual hybrids (intersectional hybrids) between Garden Peonies and Tree Peonies. There are several varieties, all highly sought after by collectors, yet easy to grow and very hardy. This selection forms an upright bush of lush green leaves. The large double to semi-double flowers are an unusual blend of red, yellow, and orange, with a sort of coppery look from a distance. Highly unique!

Sorry, I wonder it's right. The Kopper Kettle (Copper Kettle) in The Peony Database looks different.

Hankeat, not sure what you mean?

But the reason I think its a cross between the two......... I have only collected seeds from my tree peonies, and the above seedling/plant dies back to the ground come winter. Also, no ants on the flower bud. The normal peony always have ants on the buds. I have never seen ants on tree peony buds in my garden.

Whatever it is, it sure is a beauty. Hopefully next year in has more flowers. It only had the one flower.

Hi Hankeat,

I didn't mean to imply that it is 'Copper Kettle', only that it is possible to cross a herbaceous Peony with a Tree Peony. I would say that is definitely not 'Copper Kettle' based on tne color.

Guff,
Your seedling is stunningly beautiful and if it is a hybrid as you say you definitely have a most unique plant. You are quite right to be most excited about this beauty.
This one of my first postings to this group, but I had to say something about this seedling. Congratulations!!

Jim_sullivan, thanks.

Sorry no pictures this year , was so busy this spring. I didn't get around to taking pictures. I did pollinate the flower with a dark red, with white edge tree peony, the pods are getting larger. Hopefully there are seeds inside.
