I have two peonies that are too tall for the spot that they're in so I want to move them in the autumn. They are good bloomers but will it take a few years for them to flower again?

That is the theory. But my own experience has been exactly the opposite. In fact I have moved peonies in order to make them flower.
You are always advised to divide peonies when you transplant them, and I suppose if you do they won't flower the next year. I have moved two or three that weren't flowering well (or at all) without dividing them, and they flowered well the following year - and thereafter.

I have had the same experience as Mara.

Interesting. I will be moving the whole plant in both instances so hopefully all will go well. Thanks for the advice.

Same experience here. I have always moved them in the fall and they bloom the following season. I do believe it is important to prepare the new spots well with lots of organic material. As well it is important that they not be planted too deep - I plant mine with the new "eyes" about 2 inches deep. Most perennials I will move at any time of the year - even in bloom. Peonies are the exception I only move them in the fall. The cooler temps helps to develope a stronger root system.
