Collected my tree peony seeds, the smaller ones are peony. They have been soaking for two days. Heres a link to germinating peony seeds. http://www.peonyseeds.com/growing.html

I have around 15-20 seeds that have germinated so far. Another month and I will stick them in the fridge.

Guff, good to see you posting. I love all your seed projects. Those are all tree peony seeds?

Terryk, thanks. I think I only had 5-8 peony(usually don't collect these), all the rest are tree peony. The tree peony are the huge seeds, and the smaller one's(hard to see) are peony.

I read the article about seed germinating. Did you find it difficult to maintain the temperatures? It seems as if they are very specific about the temperatures being steady at different levels.

Terryk, I had them sitting on top of my computer monitor until Jan 1. Once removed 50-60 degree they started to germinate. The instructions doesn't really say how long this step is, but I figured I give them 3-4 weeks before I stick them into the fridge. Then they will stay until I see a leaf shoot growing. This is the first year I have tried growing them indoors. In the past I would collect the seeds and plant them into the ground. Last year I think I had about the same amount as pictured in my first post. No clue if those germinated. I read someplace that it takes seeds 2-3 years if planted outside to germinate and to see a leaf shoot growing. I won't be doing that anymore.

What we gardeners will do to get germination! Unfortunately, I have a flat screen monitor so that's not an option. Last question for a bit-did you get your seed from the source above? Some of their selection looks very interesting. I should know better than to peak at your posts!

Terryk, these were collected from my plants. I have around 10 different tree peony, and maybe 15-20 different peony around the yard that I have bought. I never posted pictures of these except my beautiful seedling. Remind me in the summer, and I will send you some. I still owe you the tiger lily's and bloodroot, haven't forgotten.

Seeds are taking off, up to around 50 germinated. I guess it's ok for the roots just to lay there? The instructions doesn't say anything about this. I assume the seed provides all the energy/food they need until planted out? Seems they grow them in plain vermiculite. I do have some soil mixed in with mine.
Heres another link about growing from seed. http://www.paeonia.com/html/peonies/propagation.htm

Decided to move them into the fridge for the next stage of growth. The seeds that you can't see with a root growing, do have one. Not really sure why some roots grew down, while others stretched on the surface.

I've never even thought about trying to collect seeds from my peonies before. Maybe I'll try that this year. Great stuff, thanks, Guff!

I'm with Seil on this and Guff thank you for the information. I got my first tree peony last year and wow! All I can say is I'm going to need a bigger yard.

Seil, Karma your welcome. I hope you have success. I have a leaf shoot forming on some already. Another week and I will prick out the ones with a shoot and pot them up.

I potted up the three seedlings with the leaf shoots today. I'm not really sure if your suppose to cover the seed with soil or not. I think as the leaf shoot grows, then I will add more soil. I don't want to chance the shoot rotting.

Guff, keep those photos coming! This is a real learning experience for me. I cut off a branch on ours yesterday as it was way down low and curling. I just stuck it into dirt in the greenhouse.

Noticed this Tree Peony seedling today. I wonder how many more are going to show. The seeds were planted in the ground Fall 06 and I think I had around 100 seeds.
