Welcome to the forums! I've certainly never grown one here in Canada, but have seen gorgeous tree ferns in Costa Rica. They are slow growers I believe and cost an arm and a leg. I'd be very thorough researching this for your zone. It could be an expensive experiment.

I have three tree ferns. After ten years they are about 6 to 7 feet tall. These are very common around southern California and require little care.

There are two common types of Australia tree ferns--one is Cyathea cooperi and the other is Dicksonia antarctica. The Cyathea is slow growing and very sensitive to frost, so I assume the one you saw is Dicksonia antarctica. I have three of these and with 3 years go from gallon size plants to a good 8-10 feet across in size, though the trunk increases at only about 1/2 inch per year. It is the hardiest tree fern, and perhaps with some protection, you might be able to grow it. It has been grown as far north as Vancouver. They are wonderful plants!

They are very impressive plants but so very expensive here.

I am zone 8b here and I planted one...It is a lovely specimen and will need protection from the frost. I will mulch it heavily come next winter. I hope you can find one for a reasonable amount.

Too broad of a brush stroke Paulmcd. This is not entirely true. There are many tens of thousands of tissue cultured Dicksonia and Cyathea available in the US. The larger specimens MAY be imported but all the nurseries selling tree ferns that I know of are mass manufactured domestically from tissue culture. So if you are buying a young, small, inexpensive plant in the Americas. It is most assuredly from tissue culture and is a perfectly responsible purchase. On the unethical removal from rainforests, I completely agree with you.

I HATE passing something like this on to anyone..... but last season I saw an enormous number of these plants in 5 gallon containers at very reasonable prices... at Home Despot. You might try them........... Additionally.......... Teresa, I seen tons of these in southern Louisiana..... You shouldn't have any trouble with them there. Just my opinion though.

Hi neighbor, I'm zone 9a from Louisiana. I purchased an austrailian tree fern in early June of this year. I re-potted it and the plant is doing great! I've not fertilized of yet. I read that these(Cyathea cooperi) grow to 30 to 40 ft. Boy, if so I'm in trouble. Mine has grown quite a bit in 4 months. I'll show you the plant in June and now. Take a look.
In the first pic, you will see my blue butterfly. Take a closer look at the 2nd pic and notice where the blue butterfly is.

They often have them for sale up here tho there's no label other than Tree Fern. They can be kept up here with some protection. I'd love one but am apprehensive about paying so much money for something that may well die the first winter.

Larry, i missed this post when you first posted it, as long as you wrap the trunk in something it should be fine, often a chickenwire cage is formed around the fronds (when they are either cut off or pulled upwards) and then stuffed with straw, as long as the top doesnt get frosted it should be fine.

Oh and by the way Larry, the ones your likely to be seeing over here are Dicksonia antarctica, not 100% but almost guaranteed, its worth asking before you purchase though to be on the safe side.

Is there any way to prune tree ferns in garden to prevent them from growing so large? Just planted several under a sweet bay magnolia. They are now only 3 feet tall. Thanks, Bob
