This little Athyrium niponicum 'Picta' just called out to me on the way home from work. The pic doesnt do it justice, theres actually pink in there! I also just discovered that this plant was voted plant of the year 2004!

Your fern is very pretty. I love ferns but so far I don't have much luck growing them. However, that does not stop me from trying anyway...so this is my recent purchase, Auriculate Lady Fern.

Welcome to GB! Your fern has wonderful color. I have found my ferns do well under a large shade tree but this is at a point in the garden that levels out and is close to a wetland area. Maybe the moisture is the secret to my success. Also the tree is very large and the shade has become quite dense. The back portion is mostly hostas and ferns. If you want to try a great fern get an autumn fern. They stayed green here well into December last year.

Not sure, not sure, Larry... I think Luiza's fern definitely looks like my Athyrium othoforum okanum (auriculate fern), with creamy leaves and reddish stems... As far as yours is concerned, I'm a little surprised with the name : Athyrium nipponicum pictum usually looks much more metallic than you pic... But it might be an effect of the light...

The tag seems right...but does your plant know it? lol... Your plant seems so "green" for a painted fern... I don't have a 100% confidence in tags, you know... Or, as I suggested, it might be an effect of the light on your pic, maybe.. I hope you are right !!! Sorry for my doubts...

The painted fern is one of my favorites. Last year I purchased a "cousin" of that fern called 'ghost fern' that had more silver in it. Mary

Maybe my luck in growing ferns is not so bad.. I just noticed my Japanese Painted Fern started to show signs of life, how exciting. It certainly took it's time when pretty much everything else is well on it's way. Is this particular fern usually late to emerge? It's only his second season with us so maybe he needs time to mature.

Painted fern is a late riser. Allowing for the difference in zone, I'd say this is a normal time for it to come into growth for you. 'Ghost' ist even later.

Thanks Mara, I was almost ready to dig it up and compost it. Now I'll know to give it more time.

I found one of mine up about 6 inches this last week. I don't remember if I transplanted a fern I had for several years when I made this new bed last summer or if this is a new one of 2 I got on ebay last summer, but I can't find any pots labeled japanese painted, so I guess I must have planted them someplace. The new ones looked more green than silver last year. Once I had the "Ursula's red" variety of this, but it died. So did my autumn fern the winter before this. I haven't moved it yet, hoping that something good might happen. Marie

I bought a Pictum fern too just last week. It looks great! I would like to find the Ghost fern though. I did ask the Nursery about it. But I didn't see any. AS I thought that the Pictum might have been the Ghost Fern.

I found Ghost Fern at Big Dipper Farms from the link provided there. Thank you! Also, in their catalog there are many varieties of Pictum. Some look greener than the painted fern. Maybe that is why treelover's fern doesn't look right, or the sun isn't shining on it.

A second painted is coming up in another bed of the new shade garden. It doesn't appear to be as purply & silver as the first one to emerge, and seems smaller. Perhaps this is one of the "lost/misplaced" ones from ebay. It was finally half-way decent outside after work, but still rather cold, and I wanted to take some pictures. But the battery needed recharging. Hope tomorrow will be as good, or even better.
