This is the first time I have tried growing a Camellia in Okahoma City. I finally feel its worth the effort and has great potential. So..... here is our Camellia's foliage mixed with Japanese Painted Fern....'
We have high hopes for this area within about 3 [+-] years. It also contains an Autumn Fern, a Ghost Fern, and Variegated Solomon's Seal.

Sounds like beautiful combinations. Has the camellia seen its first winter yet? What variety did you plant? A friend who lives nearby has been growing Nuccio's Gem with no winter protection at all - and with absolutely no winter damage either, even after this past very hard winter. This has given me ideas... Like you, he grows his in a shady area.

I'm embarrassed to have to say I bought this Camellia at Home Depot....and only know that it is a C. japonica. The appearance of the plant and it's price sucked me right into an impulse buy. I would love having 'Nuccio's Gem.' It is, indeed, a formidably beautiful bloom...and plant. We shall just have to wait and see what I've gotten. If it is not hardy....I will try again... but this time with one of the exceptionally hardy Camellia's from Roslyn Nursery. http://www.roslynnursery.com/

Incidentally, here is the newly planted area....
left to right: Ghost Fern, Autumn Fern behind Variegated Solomon's Seal, Japanese Painted Fern in front of the Camellia, more Autumn Fern on the far side. The Monkey Grass will be slowly and carefully removed as the ferns grow and spread.
