as an experiment about 5 years ago. Before that, despite 31 years of gardening and designing gardens, I can only remember seeing perennial ferns in an Oklahoma City garden once. Ferns had simply never been thought of as plants adaptable to our growing conditions. I was stunned when the the ferns we planted succeeded as admirably as they did.... and still do. You might remember an earlier post when I was so amazed the ferns waded through last summer's heat as well as they did. We have 5 species in our garden at this point. My favorite was, and remains, Japanese Tassel Fern [Polystichum polyblepharum]. I'm very pleased to see they have great potential for this coming season: yesterday:

Do any of your ferns turn color in the fall? I've always been surprised how much of the fall color I've seen in parts of New England, the Great Lakes Area and the Pacific Northwest are due to the ferns that grow along the roadsides. Your success is inspiring. Maybe ferns would grow here in Southern Utah. But I suppose they require quite a bit of water.

Hi John! Ours are emerging only now. How I love ferns. We have many here! Maidenhair is doing well this year. I also love the Ghost fern... which I see on your other thread as well!
