Rowan you have a fabulous collection of ferns! They all look so lush and happy. Thanks for sharing. I had seen a garden show recently and the lady had some ferns that she said could be invasive and called them 'Maple Ferns'. She said they were easily pulled out though. Do you have any idea of what she was referring to? I have an area that could use some invasive ferns. Mary/Gainesville, GA

Impressing photos and impressing plants indeed. Interesting also how much the rather simple layout and construction of ferns can be varied. Do you prepare the soil for each species separately? - or do they all accept the conditions you happen to have in your garden?

Mary, off the top of my head i cant find any references to a maple fern, any idea on genus or family? The ferns shown comprise just about 1/3rd of my collection, i have 27 taxa which i have managed to identify + 3 or so which i havent. I guess their so lush as it has been raining for what seems like weeks on end, but i never have any problems even during dry periods. All the ferns are grown in a space approx 3m x 2m i would guess, maybe a little larger. Christian, i dont prepare the soil in any particular manner other than forking it over well before planting. The soil is extremely good quality as we incorporate a large amount of compost every year. If it doesnt survive then its unlikely that i'll try again. The Davallia is a bit of an experiment to see if i can get it to survive with winter protection, but we'll see. Cheers Rowan

Actually i may have lied slightly when i said i grew all my ferns in a 3x2m space, i have pretty much run out of room so some are in pots now. The Athyrium otophorum ssp. okanum is going to be moved to a better spot hopefully soon if this rain ever gives up. Cheers.

I have to be honest, most of these aren't that unusual over here bar the Davallia, they are all fairly commonly available in the garden centres :) Thanks for the compliment anyway :) Cheers. Rowan
