I thought this was one of my regular species that I see quite often here, but the white postocular stripe is different. I hope someone know what species it is!

I think it is female White throated mountain gem. I have just ordered a new humming bird book, so I should soon be an expert:)

Looks very much like a white eared hummer. I'm guessing you live in AZ. Ron

Can't help you on that one. But I did some searches on Google under Birds of Costa Rica and am amazed at the richness of your Birds world, the Hummers in particular. I saved the web sites to my favorites/bookmarked them. Your Hummer I could not find, unfortunately. Beautiful bird and wonderful pictures.

Mother_nature,the Ruby throats have all left Costa Rica to return north. Jackiek, the plant is Stachytarpheta or Porters weed. The favourite of all 7 species of hummers that visit my garden.

Since ruby throats returned yesterday, I was surfing through hummingbirds and found some lovely photos. Maybe this is your bird. http://www.glennbartley.com/naturephotography/Costa%20Rica/Birds/gardenemer ald.htm

Mother_nature, yes, this is 'mine' even feeding at 'my' flower...but it isn't a Fork tailed garden emerald. I think it has been misnamed. Here is a some photos of the Fork tailed garden emerald There is another photo by Michael Fogden that has been made into a poster. Both he and his wife are authors of the hummingbird book I have recently purchased but it is still at a friends. http://flickr.com/photos/langooney/248420806/

I have just received my 'Hummingbirds of Costa Rica' by Michael & Patricia Fogden. What a marvelous gift for Hummingbird lover or for yourself! By the way, my 'unknown hummer' never made it into the book.

Blue sage, I miss them when they have returned to the summer habitat. When we lived in BC we only saw the Rufous but it was exciting when they arrived. Here I get excited every time I see a hummer in the garden. Maybe I'm getting old and get excited easy... Here is the male. Notice there is no postocular stripe on him.

I see now the lack of the white stripe. It's hard to tell some of these apart I think.
