Rather then your Bird molting, could it be that he plugs out his own feathers in order to line his next with it? I know the Squirrels do it with their fur. Must hurt.

What a great show. I find feathers around the yard all the time but have never seen them molting.

There's been such a burst of activity in this forum lately that I lost track of this thread. But I did want to come back and thank everyone for the kind comments. So: thanks, DW, Sue, Larry, Cal, Sharon, Carol, BlueSage and Tanya. Cal, The pictures where an eye is visible show what looks like pin feathers around the eye, so I think they are molting. Most birds here have already laid their eggs. It gets too hot for hatchlings in early June, sometimes even in May, giving them a big impetus for an early start.
