I thought this showed nicely the difference in sizes as they all visited the same feeder one after another.

Wow that Hairy looks like a behemouth (sp) compared to the smaller Downy. And the RBWP doesn't look like it's that much larger than the Hairy. Great shots!

ROTFLOL!!!! Yes right!

Love this comparison. Those Hairy's are quite a bit larger than the Downy's. I've been trying and trying to get a shot with both birds (I think you did one time didn't you?) but to no avail.

Great shots, thanks for sharing.

What a wonderful series of comparison shots, Carol! The background is so pretty with the blue sky and greenery...the birdies just pop out against it:)

I love the beautiful red head on the Red-bellied Woodpecker!

Thanks for your thread, I was told this was a downey woodpecker...it looks almost the same as the hairy woodpecker? Is it the same? In my pic it looks chubby, perhaps because it was a cold winter day?

I have never seen the third type however, the red-bellied???

Isn't that funny - that was exactly my thought before I read all of the comments. I have seen a pileated several times not far from home, but he tends to stay in the less populated areas I think Beautiful shots - I am not a photographer but I love the birds, and this forum. Keep shooting! This is just great!

Yes Monique, Downy Woodpecker with the smaller sized bill relative to the head size; a good way to tell the two apart. The Red-bellied Woodpecker is considered a Carolinian species, but is increasing their range northward into Ontario, so you may see one yet! My sister now has one visiting up on Georgian Bay!

Thanks everyone and maybe one day I'll add that Pileated, but I think I'd need to reinforce the feeder-lol

Oh yes I see the difference now (in bill size) that you've pointed it out...thanks again your wonderful pics and your willingness to help. I am going to print off the info you and Zak provided in the other thread and work on my settings :)
