Thank You Arlene for you motivation as my family wanted cake this weekend and being it was a long week I started out with a yellow cake but forgetting what I was doing added double the water. So a white cake mix was then added and the gang loved it! We had enough to make cupcakes which the grandson deemed his and they started to disappear fast, the heck with the big cake. So thank you Arlene for the motivation or we wouldn't be serving cake this weekend.

Looks like a Black Forest cake to me, but I've never made one. I love that 3-layer cake, Karma. And the baby shower cake is just too cute. I'm with Arlene on that one -- no calories -- LOL.

My guess would be Red Velvet Cake, DJ, a southern classic. Really, it is quite a moist and tasty cocoa flavored cake(I've read that beet juice was used to achieve the red coloring, originally, though most cooks use food coloring these days). I remember a very funny scene in the movie "Steel Magnolias" when, to everyone's horror, the groom's cake was a red velvet cake made in the form of an armadillo. I think that one of the characters remarked that when it was cut, it looked like an autopsy.

Thanks, Ellie and Cindy. It occurred to me that it could be Red Velvet Cake, but it certainly doesn't look like any I've ever seen, so I really didn't know. I think the olives were messing with my mind, telling me that it just had to be a fruit and veggie cake of some kind. I kept thinking the frosting was cabbage leaves and that the inside was cranberry sauce. You can tell I have fall delights on the brain! HAHA!! Now I think I'm going to have to drag out my RVC recipe for Christmas and add the sprinkles. I'd never seen that before, either. I'm wondering if my recipe even calls for cocoa. How weird is that?! Surely it must, but you'd think I'd remember that!

DJ, there's only a couple tablespoons of cocoa, not really enough to give it a chocolate flavor.

Oh! Well that explains why I was sitting here thinking that it was just white cake with red coloring. I bet you can't tell it's probably been a couple of decades since I had or even made one. HAHA!!

Lots of variations of these old recipes, aren't there? My red velvet cake recipe uses 1/4 cup cocoa - or 2 melted squares of BAKER'S unsweetened baking chocolate. Not enough to call it a chocolate cake, for sure, but enough to discern the flavor.

Oh, yum, now that sounds really good, Ellie! I should try to hunt mine down right now and see what it says... and then up it to what yours says. LOL! I don't even know where to begin looking, now that it's so many years and at least 7 moves later. I can't even remember if it's something I copied from my Mom, cut out of a magazine, or have in a cookbook. It's going to be a never-ending treasure hunt if I have to peruse all of my cookbooks.
