I saw this plant growing in the alpine house at wisley and loved the colour combination.

Does anyone grow this plant, if so, can you tell me more about it. Is it a bulb, or tuber, and how easy/difficult is it to grow?

It is a South African bulb I believe and its hardiness would depend I guess on the altitude it grows at in its native home.

Hi Pat, Thanks for that...I've read now on the link from Terry that its related to the hyacynth....it does look similar doesn't it.

Thanks for the link Terry.....what a shame the author say's
"a highly desirable variety, which I have been unable to find anywhere"

Maybe it's for the best.....can't afford to have any more plant addictions..lol!

Gorgeous plant though!

I'm glad I looked into this thread. Did you notice the Arrowhead Nursery promo? Next Saturday my sis and I will be headed over there. I would love to find the Lachenalia aloides var. vanzyliae but then it may not be hardy in zone 5. It is just gorgeous!

Hi again Tanya, I was wondering if you and your sister went to Arrowhead Nursery...and if so, did you buy any Lachenalia aloides.....or any other plants?

I didn't see any promotions for them..but I'm in the UK...don't know if you realised.
I did go onto their Alpine site though, and they've got some lovely plants. It said they will ship to Europe, but minimum order is $500 !!
