Update. the ones that had the grow tip break/rot off are putting up another grow tip. I have around 50 total seedlings.

That's good news, have you got to the point of transplanting any yet?

How long does it take for the leaf to unroll itself. Mine seem to be taken forever for the leaf to grow and open up.

Looking at your photo Guff, I taking it that you mean the leaves are rolled in the same way that some people can roll the sides of their tongue up to create a kind of tube. If you seedlings leaves are doing this, they need more light. They aren't unrolling as they are still growing upwards in search of more light. Put them somewhere brightly lit, but not in direct sun. You'll find that the seed leaf will soon flatten out and expand in size.

Update The seedling leaf has unrolled on all my seedlings now, and growing bigger everyday, some are the size of a quarter. I have many putting up their second grow shoot, and a couple have two new grow shoots growing up from the bulb/corm. All the ones that had the grow shoot break off or rot off, have all made it and put up a new grow shoot. I would post a picture, but with the size they limit you too, is to small and not really worth the effort, since you really can't see any detail.

Great news Guff! I know it is so hard to get a good photograph. I forgot, what species is it that you are growing?

They are hederifolium. They seem to all be different leaf patterns/shape/color, not one alike. It's been about four months since I started from seed. How many grow tips do they put up before they flower. I read that seedlings should keep growing through the summer into the fall. Just wondering how many new grow tips,I should have before you think it may flower.

The seedlings will only grow through the summer if you can keep them cool enough. If it gets too hot, they'll go dormant. If that happens, you'll see fresh leaves around September (again, depending on your climate it could be a few weeks either way). These leaves will persist through to June next year, when the tubers will go dormant again. It's not very likely that you'll see flowers this autumn, Guff. Perhaps just the odd one or two on any plants which are particularly vigorous, but don't hold your breath. It's odd because hederifolium seems to be very vigorous from seed, but most of my own plants don't flower until their second year. So, I would imagine you'll see flowers in autumn 2006. Time from germination to flowering has more to do with tuber size (related to whatever particular species being discussed, as some species produce very small tubers even when mature) and how the plant is treated during its first year or two. If you can keep it happy, and growing for as long as possible in its first year, you have a higher chance of seeing flowers in a relatively short period of time, as the tuber would have kept growing and been that much closer to maturity. If your tubers do go dormant, hold back on the water a little. It takes some getting used to, but it will help. More cyclamen are killed by overwatering than underwatering. That tuber is a storage organ, and they are designed to cope with less water during the summer months. Obviously, if you do keep the small tubers growing through the summer, water as you are.

Even after reading my cyclamen book again, watering seems to be something I do not feel I have mastered. It also seems that different species require more or less, so one really has to keep trays hold which species. I wish we lived close to each other and you could offer "hands on" advice! By the way Guff, where in NY are you? I am in Putnam County, perhaps we are neighbors and don't even know it.

One of my seedling leaf, is bent over and dropping to the soil. Is this normal? Does the seedling leaf die, as more shoots come up. On this seedling there are two grow tips, maybe an inch tall, coming up from the tuber.

I don't think you have anything to worry about Guff, if the plant has its second and third leaves coming through. I'm presuming that they look healthy?

I was looking at my seedling today. My biggest seedling, has 6 grow tips coming up. The bulb/corm is the size of a big marble, (dime size on the top of the soil).

That is fantastic news Guff! You must be so excited. I am starting to see some of my hederifolium seedlings really take off too. Maybe when they get larger you can share some pictures.

I would take some pictures, but the file size they limit you too, you can't see anything. The pictures I uploaded before, you can barely make anything out. Anyone know of a free picture hosting site? I really need to transplant them soon.

One of the programs I use is Photoimpact 8 to reduce photo file size. I'm sure this version can be downloaded for free. Try it Guff. It's very easy to use. Email me if you need any help.
