I was looking at my Purpurascens today, I see flower buds forming. Looks like I will be crossing Victoria X Purpurascens, sooner then I thought. Should also add, I have my coum seed soaking, so that will tomorrows project. I looked at my Purpurascens pots, but no signs of life yet.

Victoria flower that opened today, first on this plant. I think this one is the best so far. The others were shades of red, this one has a nice shade of purple. My camera shows it more pink, but to the eye it's purple.

Very exciting news Guff. I only had one flower last year. This year three plants set one flower each. Two got nipped off by something. It looks like you maybe having seed set too.

TerryK, I have been collecting pollen from my Victoria for the past couple of days. I wonder if I should put the pollen in the freezer or fridge, or just let it stay out in a cool spot? I think I will pollinate all the flowers with Victoria pollen. It will be interesting to see if any turn out to be hardy and what they may look like.

Guff, I wouldn't want to be a nay-sayer, but crossing your 'Victoria' with cyclamen of different species is going to be a hard uphill road In most genera all species generally have the same number of chromosomes. According to the Cyclamen.org site, cyclamen are vastly different from many genera in that the chromosome count of the different species varies all over the map. Crossing plants with differing chromosome numbers is not impossible, but is very near to it. Some hederifolium seem to match purpurascens, but nothing seems to match persicum. There seems to be a larger number of species with 30 chromosomes, so they might cross more easily.

Geoforce, some good info there. I did do some researching. If I recall it said that the offspring of the two had different chromosome counts. If it works, great if not oh well.

Hello Guff, it's difficult to say what a normal amount of flowers is really. Some of my plants produce only one flower in the first year whilst others produce as many as half a dozen at once with a few more coming later on. I have some stock plants which definitely yield more vigorous seedlings which will flower less than a year after germination and produce 6+ flowers too. Unfortunately, these plants are the most ordinary in my collection! If you run 'persicum purpurascens hybrid' through Google you'll find lots of info on that hybrid. It has been done but under lab conditions. I'm sure you've read all there is to read on the subject, anyway. BTW, your bed looks great, Guff, especially now you have top dressed with the pine needles. Next year should be an interesting one for you.

Terryk, going good so far. Winter will be the true test. I check on them everyday. The squirrels have been digging in the bed, and digging some corms up, but they don't eat them. I find them laying on top of the needles. So far 4-5 corms have been dug up, I just replant, water, they seem fine. I was curious, so I counted how many seedlings that are in my first bed, 309 give or take. I counted my second bed seedlings, just over 90 more.

Soon you will be replacing that profile picture with your own bed of cyclamen! Wow 309 cyclamen, I hope it works out. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. What is your low temperature during winter-I don't know what area of NY you are. We could be neighbors for all I know!

TerryK, i'm in upstate NY, its zone 5. I tend to think big when I start new garden projects. I just planted out my Asiatic/Oriental lily seedlings, my guess 500+. I have dreams of 10 thousand+ of crocus also. I have maybe 1k daylily seeds to plant in the spring. By the way TerryK , I didn't forget about your lily bulbils and bloodroots seeds,I just changed my mind. I will send some plants in the spring instead. The bulbils I had saved for you, 100 or so, all the roots grew together it was a mess so I planted the whole clump.

My Purpurascen now has 5 flower buds forming, my other plant has 2, nothing on my third plant as of yet. I did noticed that two more seeds germinated. I removed them and put them in another pot. No signs of life in any of my seed pots, it's been almost a month since I started the Purpurascens seeds. The instructions said coum takes 3-4 weeks, so looks like i have a ways to go on those also.

I looked back to see when I started my Purpurascens seeds last year. It was on Nov 26, and my first germination was Jan 28. Tim is Purpurascens the fastest to flower from seed, with the hardy forms? Update on biggest Purpurascen.
