Guff that looks great but are you sure it is purpurascens? The leaf looks more like hederifolium to me. But Tim or Tony may be able to tell you more. Of course the true test will be when they flower. If they are strongly scented you surely have purpurascens. Five flowers is sooo exciting no matter what it is and this being a 1 year old plant is great job done.

TerryK, same plant that I have posted pictures of before, i'm 100% positive it's purpurascens. Later I will take a whole plant picture.

Pretend you don't see the toothpicks. I used them to help keep the leaves off of one another. Tim, I was wondering what is the sticky sap that I see on some of the leaves?

This plant is in my second bed. I haven't had a chance to put down any pine needles yet.

Guff is that one plant? It appears to be enjoying the bed you made for it.

TerryK, 1 plant. It has another leaf forming that you can't see. I thought 8 leaves was pretty good. I'm not sure what normal is, but I have some with just 2 leaves, most of them have 4-7 leaves per plant.

They are loving all the compost you add to those beds I would say. You are going to have some nice displays soon.

wilsonae_cyclamen, I looked back to see when I started my Hederifolium. It was November 28, 2005. I didn't start all of them that day, I did more seed each weekend until I had them all potted up. I had germination in less then a week. TerryK, I think your right about the compost. I went through alot of compost, with other projects also. It's just leaf compost nothing else other then sticks and rocks that I screened out. If I get 1 or 2 flowers from each plant next fall I will be happy. The following year, I think they should put on a show.

TerryK, hopefully by that time I will have a new camera, mines ancient compared to todays high megapixels 4-5k+, mines only 500. Purpurascen update. It's putting up more growth points. I may have more flowers forming, but just can't tell yet. I checked on my seed pots, some seeds have germinated in my Purpurascen pots, no signs of life in the coum pots.

Purpurascen update, there are five flowers, and maybe number 6 forming. Very poor picture, so it's hard to see them, best out of 6 tries. I figure maybe by Thanksgiving a flower will be open. Some coum seed has started to germinate. Tim, I was wondering if I should bag up some leaves, and then place the trash bags around the outer edge of the beds? I thought maybe this would help protect them from high winds and such.

That will be wonderful if all those buds open at once. The smell is going to be fantastic Guff. One is great, a few will be devine. Good luck with the cyclamen this weekend. We are going to get 40-50 mile winds and maybe 3 inches of rain. Let's hope our cyclamen weather the storm.

TerryK, I can't wait. My other plant has 4 flowers forming, none on my third plant. It rained here all day and night, I don't think I have to worry about the drainage in the beds. The bitter cold come winter is what I'm worried about. I want to protect them as much as possible, I would hate to have any die, let alone all of them.

Guff, great news that you have multiple flowers on your C. purpurascens. If it were me, I wouldn't worry about protecting the hederifolium bed. I wouldn't have thought they would suffer too much damage from the wind, and it's not really a problem if a few leaves are lost anyway - not for the plants, anyway. Whether or not you can bear to see a little bit of damage going on is another matter, Guff! You've protected the tubers with pine needles, so I think you've done all you can for the winter months.

Tim, The winds here get very strong. I wasn't worried about the wind damage to the leaves, the high winds and extreme cold together making -15 temps is what worries me. I thought with the trash bags around the beds, it would make a big difference in the temp zone inside. I think I will bag some up, want to protect them as much as possible. Tim, how long would you say before a flower opens?

Ahh, OK, I see. I had a feeling you would want to act to protect you cyclamen, Guff. I think you had already convinced yourself. I've seen photos of the bed but none of the surrounding area - is it completely open? It's difficult to say when a flower will open. It depends at what stage the flower is in its cycle, temperature, etc. Can you post a photo of the flower(s)?
