I'm just back from vacation Guff and see your post. You must have enjoyed those flowers and it's great to see seed forming.

TerryK, yes every flower.

I can't wait until summer, and see how many Purpurascens seeds I get. I'm hoping to get 20+ seed pods between the 4 plants.

Hopefully my Hederifolium are well and alive, they are under 10 inches of snow. They have been covered with a blanket of snow for the past month.

You must be getting seed/pods also?

Guff, I had seed pods, but then my watering schedule got thrown off due to a little Grandson and daughter coming to live with us. They did not survive I am afraid to say.

I think I may have one left on my purpurascens, but just trying to keep the collection going till I get my act together is tough. I need a glasshouse so I can water easier and so they grow better.

I have coum outdoors, not sure about them. The last I checked my hederifolium and purpurascen were ok, but the ice! Time will tell....

TerryK, it should be interesting, winter is almost over. The snow here is starting to melt. Maybe by the weekend, I will be able to check on them.

I'm amazed at how much faster Purpurascens grow, my coum still only have the seed coat leaf.

Galanthophile, thats the plan :)

It looks like my cyclamen have made it through the winter. There are only acouple spots where the snow has melted enough to see, but they look good so far.

A delightful sight, Guff.

I'm worried about all the tiny cyclamen we left in NE Washington. The snow won't melt off them for a month or more, but we'll be delayed getting back and I hope they'll be OK.

You give me hope.

Great to see Guff, looks like you have things down pat on how to get them growing outdoors.

I may have to read up on things, I am not sure about my coum bed.

Hi Terry,

How does your garden grow? We just had 8-10 inches of snow and there is a 2-3 inch layer of ice beneath all that snow that is literally everywhere. The winds are having great fun and keeping the wind chimes working overtime. My cyclamen and hellebore seedlings, most of them first timers that did survive the first and second round of old man winter were looking quite miserable; I will have to wait until all this snow melt to see the final results. If anything survived - cyclamen, hellebore, etc. I will have to award them the medal of honor for bravery above and beyond the call of duty, smile!

I just ordered a couple of cases of Anderson utility band pots square cross bottom; the C. Graecum roots as you know are quite extensive, filling the pots and becoming root-bound and the extra deep pots will be perfect! Home Depot did not have the Green Light Super Bloom fertilizer so will have to try one of the other gardening centers in the neighborhood.

Anyway, have a great gardening year now that spring is almost here finally, we hope!

Wilson, I am under a blanket of snow so I have no idea what lays ahead. I know the hellebores in some areas are ok but the buds may be lost from the ice. We'll see.

The cyclamen are a big question-I did not get out there before the last round of snow/ice came so I keep my fingers crossed that all will be ok.

I hope everyone's cyclamen make it through the winter, and flower in the spring/fall. I don't want to think about having to start over again with Hederifolium.

Purpurascens update.

The two smaller plants in front each have 5 flower buds forming. The bigger plant continues to put up more flower buds.

Galanthophile, thanks. I like the plant on the front left the best.

Well the snow has once again melted. I really need to get some chicken wire and put around and on top. The squirrels keep digging, and I'm tired of replanting. The sandy soil makes it easy for them to dig in.

I no longer have to worry about squirrels. I picked up some deer netting, and that fixed them for good :)

Guff, didn't you say once you were not getting germination on purpurascens? I think you have growing this species down pat. What a great smell they must be given off.

TerryK, I think purpurascens is the easiest and fastest growing once they germinate. I also think you need alot of seed to start with, since the germination rate is so low compared to the others forms. I think I bought 200 purpurascens seed last summer and out of those I have 35-40 plants. But like last time hopefully a few more germinate this spring/summer.

I'm very happy to have so many flowers, and hopefully 500+ seed come summer. Summer 08, I should have plenty of extra seed to trade.

Hi Guff,

After sowing C. purpurascens you have toplace the seed pots outside in a cold frame. C. purpurascens is germinating very good after a long cold period. Frost/Nightfrost is no problem at all, C. purpurascens needs that to germinate well. If it is snowing, open the cold frame. A lot of snow on the pots is great, the melting water later on will be very important. This is the way I germinated the last ten years, I always have a germination around 80-90 % in June/July.

Regards,

Jan
