The seedlings are not like the parent. Next year I will separate the tuber from my other plants and self pollinate.

Tim Yes we did go there in fact I think we covered just about every road on the island. There was good variation at most sites but very few that were outstanding in terms of leaves.

I think everybody should have recieved the journal by now so for non members I will give you a brief run down on the trip. A three man team including myself were sent by the society to Corfu for eleven days departing November 2nd. The main object of the trip was to establish whether ssp confusum existed on the island or not and to collect plant material for research to determine this one way or another. We based ourselves in Corfu town and from here it was about an hour and a half to the furthest points north and south and out of season it was the only place where local tavernas remained open ( even team members have to eat ). With a hire car we covered the whole of the island from north to south and east to west and everywhere in between, from the highest point to sea level. We saw hundreds of thousands of plants in both large and small populations in many habitats from deep shade to open areas where olives had been cleared, so thick were the plants in places it was difficult to walk without treading on them. The consistant feature of the plants were that all were scented, the leaves were variable but not outstanding and only one plant was collected for its leaf. Only three white plants were seen on the whole trip all at the same site. Plants with larger leaves were seen and material collected although even these we did not consider to share the same morphological appearance of either confusum from Crete or Zakynthos and Lefkas and their size was due to the moist rich and shaded situation where they were growing. Corfu has a higher rainfall than London and most bulbs flower earlier here than on the hotter islands further south so were at their tail end. We did however see Crocus boryi and Galanthus reginae olgae at their best. The absolute highlight of the trip was the discovery of several red flowered hederifolium at two sites either side of a village in the south of the island and not seen anywhere else. They were of a unique colour and of course scented. Further field work will be required in this island group to determine exactly where ssp confusum grows so the society still has much work to continue with in this area.If I can answer any questions I will be happy to do so.
The best leaf we saw
Typical habitat in old olive terraces
Walnut trees on the slopes of Mt Pantokrator
Looking toward Albania.
Cyclamen en masse I would like to invite Melvyn to post some pics of the collected plants as his photography is a little better than mine.

Sounds like a great eleven days. If you need anyone to carry your bags/sarnies on future field trips I'm your man..well wo-man! That's a nice leaf Pat, lovely pattern round the edge. Is it a silver leaf, or is it just the light reflecting?...more importantly, did you collect that plant?...or any of the red flowered ones. It would be nice to get seed from them one day in the future. I do hope Melvyn posts some piccies, including some of the other plants you found.

I guess you could call it silver.
Yes it was collected as were several red ones so keep your eyes on the seed exchange in a couple of years when the plants settle down.

Pat, thank you so much for your detailed report. It sounds like a very enjoyable trip and finding the red flowered ones must have been very exciting - the little extra reward for all your scientific work. I will be in the Albanian lowland for a short hellebore field trip in early April - I wonder if there are any hederifolium and if the leaves will still be green. Are there reports of C. hederifolium ssp confusum from Albania?

I have hederifolium in the garden with arrowhead lvs that came from the Albanian border, which side I do not know, let us know what you find. I don't know of confusum from there but I guess not many people have been to Albania.

I accept your invitation Pat, first a few close ups of Cyclamen hederifolium leaves and some lichen on a tree to show the high rainfall/humidity. You may remember Pat, you thought I had really lost it at this point!

Thanks so much for remembering to post Pat. It looks like you had a great trip.
That must have been wonderful. Are all ssp confusum scented or just ones from this area?
I don't know, the leaf pattern in the photos Melvyn posted seem very nice to me.

I think you may have mis read the report. The plants we found were all spp hederifolium and we were 99% sure ssp confusum was not present on the island. If it helps the confusum I have from Crete and Zakynthos are scented.
