…my newest addition. Over the summer I accumulated many plants, mostly at discounted prices that I just had to take advantage off. The problem was that I had to plant them somewhere. It took me about two weeks to prep the site but finally it’s done. This is the whole collection taken out of various corners. I didn’t realize there were so many…
To prepare the site I took down one raised vegetable bed but left the rhubarb plant.
Finally…it’s all done.

A very attractive change, I like the curved shape of the bed. What are the purple leafed shrubs?

Luiza, Yes...Good Job! Are the purple shrubs sand cherry? At first glance I thought maybe ninebark but on looking closer...well, I'm not sure. :)

That's right the shrubs are 'Purpleleaf Sandcherry'...and you can just make out the branches of climbing New Dawn rose reaching the top of the pergola. The rose is planted on the other side of the fence.

What a beautiful job. You are much smarter than I am. I normally plant new beds way too tightly and then have to move half the plants in a year or two. I'm looking forward to seeing this next season.

Glad to see that you added compost before your great transformation. In newer areas, the soil is often miserable compacted stuff. DH will be out your way today I believe. He's off to Markham for some consulting work. :-) I just planted a Sandcherry this year for the first time.

Yes Marie, I have to supplement the soil (if you can call it soil). It's mostly clay with a lot of stone and builder's rubble. I get a nice workout while I work on preparing these new beds...it's my substitute for a gym

Can't believe that I requested this forum and have not taken the time to comment. I agree - I like the graceful curves and the pergola is a great addition. If you can underplant with spring bulbs it will add to your enjoyment. It is going to be spectacular next season.

You know Kim, this is such a new addition that I didn't even consider planting bulbs here...thanks for pointing this out.

If you plant daffodils - I recommend that you plant them near the fence on either side of your purple sand cherries. I find that it takes the foliage so long to die back and it can be quite unsightly right through August when it can be pulled away. By planting here, you will enjoy their beauty before the sand cherries leaf out and then the strappy leaves will be hidden by the shrubs when they are done. Hyacinths around the front curves of the bed would look beautiful too and the fragrance will perfume the whole area. I guess you can tell I'm a bulb freak. You might want to try that forum and ask others for some suggestions. I think you have done a beautiful job.

Thanks for the advice. I need it since I never grew bulbs before (well a few gladioli once). You have not mentioned tulips and I would like to try some of those also.

Wondering if you planted any bulbs yet... My bulb order arrived and I should be planting them tomorrow, weather permitting!

I wanted to but haven't had time for that specific task, although I was working in the garden. The bulbs are waiting in the garage and it looks like it'll be raining for the next few days. I really wish there were a few more hours in a day. By the way since this is my first time planting bulbs, when is the cut off date?

The cut off date is when the trowel no longer can pierce the soil! I've planted bulbs at Christmas time, but frankly I prefer to do it when my fingers don't freeze. I also think about squirrels and chipmunks who particularly like tulips and crocuses. I sometimes put wire mesh over the bulbs, or plant them mixed with narcissus which the squirrels don't like. Now don't forget them in the garage!

An update from today. Everything has filled in very nicely. Not very much color at the moment but I like the greenery as well. Spring bulbs put on a great show...thanks to Gardenbuddies that suggested to plant some. The Bellflowers started blooming this week and there's a lot of buds on the flower carpet roses and Daylilies. The whole project is a great success. ...end of April
...approaching mid May
...spring bulbs show
