I had the most wonderful surprise waiting for me when I got home this evening. I should have known something was up when my DH said he was going to barbecue tonight! And I should have really known when he asked me to go outside and light the grill for him. But I was totally oblivious. Then he kept asking me questions that he thought would get me to look in a certain direction. When I finallly opened my eyes up, I saw the most perfect little bed that he curved around the corner of the house. I had been talking about it for a while, but he never let on that he was going to do it for me. As you can imagine, he is high up on my list right now :-). I will have to get him to take a picture of it while I am at work tomorrow (when its daylight). Then y'all can help me with the design. Suzy

Yes he is good about surprises. He says it's worth it to see my reaction. Here is a surprise I came home to one day this spring after commenting how much I would love to have a potting table.
I did the happy dance on that one!

Hmmm perfect at least for now huh? :-) Hope nobody thought I was bragging...I was (and still am) just excited I have a new little spot to plan. Here a few pics of the spot. Originally it did come around the corner, but the bed was just big enough to hold those plants you see along the back of the house. Everything just looked silly there..especially the mix match of things I had plopped in the ground! My plan is to put a hydrangea in the corner where the aster is now. There are a couple of hosta I will reposition and I think I have a heuchera I can put there too..any other suggestions would be great. The spot is shaded for much of the day by the house and the fence, but will get some sunlight especially in the middle of summer.

How about a smell trellis next to the house with a clematis? Arabella is not too big and a wonderful bloomer.

I would love having a clematis there. Great idea. How many hours of direct sunlight do you think it would need. Especially right against the house I don't get much there..but I do probably get a couple of hours.

Everyone should be so lucky to have a husband that likes to dig. I agree with the clematis on the wall. Not sure what direction you face but I have several clematis on my east wall which gets mid-day sun and they do well. The bed is a lovely shape. I would be ever so tempted to remove all the grass and join the two beds with a stepping stone walkway to the patio(hubby wouldn't have to mow or edge) and you could have MORE plantings. Love your potting bench too.

Ohhhhh that is definitely part of the bigger plan. Hubby is unwittingly playing into my little scheme! Mwahahahaha! I am going to keep suggesting these little beds until the whole thing is one big flower garden. Eventually I would like the grass to be nothing more than a path through the yard. That plan however has not been received well by him though. He likes mowing!! Silly Man. He is quite anal about it...mows it on an angle so that it makes these nifty stripes...kind of like a baseball field. We have an agreement that he can be Type A all he wants as long as it only affects things he is willing to do himself! That works for the most part. The wall faces approximately north, but I might be willing to give the clematis a shot anyways. I can always move it to another spot if it doesn't bloom well.
