I haven't posted here in forever, but I was seeking some inspiration for a "Hat Lady" garden. You know the purple & red hat ladies?? Well, I am going to place a 'scarecrow' with a purple dress & a red straw hat in this display and wanted some ideas for plants that would be appropriate. Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated. TIA! Carolyn ps. Some that I have already chosen are salvia coccinea 'Lady in Red', Persian shield, bloodleaf plant, purple torenia, batface cupheaand... Which canna is purple leafed with red flowers?

Carolyn welcome back. I hope you don't become a stranger again. I can't help you with the canna put for purple how about Veronica. I have one that grows to 1-2 feet tall and flowers most of the summer.

thanks for the welcome back, buddies! I have missed you too! I can't help it, Arlene, I just keep getting stranger all the time!! Guess what? DS #2 graduates in June from KP and I will be in your 'neighborhood' for the festivities! We should plan a gardenbuddy get-together... I have reservations near the Nassau coliseum. The commencement speaker will be our commander in chief. What a memorable event for all of us! I'll be in touch...

Hey Carolyn. Love your choices so far. Hibiscus coccineus would be RED and big in the summer. And pineapple sage would be good for late summer/autumn. Lychnis chalcedonica (Maltese Cross) is a strong hot red for spring/early summer. Scaevola (Fan Flower) is lavender/blue and is a great low-grower and bloomer until frost. There are lots of purple petunias (Waves, etc.). Lavender cleome. Purple Mexican Petunia Ruellia brittoniana - they are quite hardy for me. Homestead Verbena. Liatris spicata. Good to hear from you, BTW.

Arlene, that is so cool... Let's plan on it. The weekend prior to June 19th sometime. My first Gardenbuddy Get-together!! Yippee! Suzy, that canna looks like it will be perfect for the bed I'm planning. Thanks a bunch.

Rhododendrons are starting to bloom here and the ones that stood out on my way home from work today were bright red and purple! I'm not sure how large the bed is, but there are a couple of low growing varieties that would make a big bold red and purple spring statement. Azaleas would fit the bill for your southern garden.
