Dear Gardenbuddies, I have a flower bed that is designated for roses and a few daylilies. This bed was previously loaded with bermuda grass and low-growing perennials. I have finally cleared out the grass & perennials so that now there is just dirt in between plants. To some that may look bare, but to me it looks clean & uncluttered. Now for my question: I have collected some fist-sized rocks (gathered from the nearby wash) which I intended to use for something else. I placed them in my rose bed (they nearly cover all of the bed area surface) for temporary keeping, and also to discourage the bermuda grass from finding new emerging spots. The wacky thing is that I kind of like the "river-rock" there. I live in zone 9. My concern is that the rocks will collect intense heat in the summer & damage the plants. I was hoping to mulch the bed underneath and leave the decorative rocks on top. Do any of you have any thoughts on this idea?

I want to hear the answer to this question too. Just today, I got rid of my mulch and laid out rocks too about the same size as yours that I've been getting from the back roads. I had mulch but the grass grows through that, I thought the rocks would be better. I'm also in zone 9 and where I have the rocks now, I have no shade at all!! Planted trees and hopefully, I'll get some shade soon.
