My aunt & uncle's yard project I worked on earlier in the year...they have lived there over 30 years & it has not had any "real" landscaping or maintaining in that time. They live 1 1/2 hours away from me, so my time spent on the project is limited & I have not had enough time to get everything accomplished. My goal was to at least do a major "clean up". I was able to get 4 new flower beds in though. I plan on going back when I can make the time & work on it more & more :) All in all, it was still a lot of fun & at least it you can see the front of the house now ;-) Front of house before-view blocked by trees & weeds
After trimming trees & clearing out under them
Rt. side of house before trimming bushes, pulling weeds, moving plants (hostas) & mulching
Above pic. after (just at different angle)

Another fantastic job on your part! I love these before and after pictures. We should start a whole new forum just for before and after shots like these.

A few more... BEFORE
AFTER: *Extended the bed by the deck stairs *Moved & divided grasses *Moved barberry, hostas & arborvitae *Added some liriope and a ninebark
BEFORE
AFTER: Shrubs look small now, but plenty of room to grow :)
Just a small existing bed where I moved the hostas & daylillies, weeded & mulched~ basically just cleaned it up ;-)
Any suggestions for the very back corner of this hosta bed? It gets almost all shade all day. I need something that is easy maintenance (a stipulation from my aunt on all the landscaping I put in!) I would like something that is a little more on the tall side since there is such a big "hole" back there. Approx. 4x4 to work with, give or take a foot

Dear Flowerfreak, Interesting pictures! For the corner - does American Beauty Berry grow in your zone? Good deciduous shrub with great fall/winter purple berries.

You did a great job! I like the idea of a before and after forum.

We have a DeJa Vu Gallery for before and after type shots. Or shots throughout the seasons. It's a great place to get ideas and to see transitions. It could actually use some traffic. Click here to see it: http://www.gardenbuddies.com/forum/messages/54865/54865.html

That last batch of pictures looks great, too, Lisa. Your aunt and uncle must be so proud of you and their new landscape. Do you think that ferns might like that empty corner?
The stipulation to "post on Aug. 15, Oct. 15, Jan. 15, April 15, and June 15" kind of throws me off there, although I see that people don't follow that rule (if you can call it a rule). Thanks for bringing it up, Susan! I'm going to have to browse it, now that you've brought it up.

Incredible job Lisa. Your back must be killing you!
Is Aucuba hardy enough for that corner? Evergreen, splashes of gold on the leaves. Would show up nicely in the corner and takes little maintenance just the occasional trim to keep it in shape. Grows to about 5x5ft but can be kept smaller if wanted. if you were a little(!) nearer I would hire you to work with me. I could do with a Hand.

Wow, you did a really nice job opening up and making it so inviting. You're a terrific niece to do this for them.

Thank you everyone for your nice comments :)
Oh, I really like this shrub. I was not aware of it until you mentioned it. I will definitely keep this in mind & see if it would work there. Thanks Berry!!
I too, like DJ, thought that the DeJa Vu Gallery was for the same pictures just through the seasons. Hmmm....maybe a place to post my before/after shots of my cutting garden when I get it done....right DH?!!
I am definitely going to have to keep ferns in mind as well. My first and only experience with ferns didn't go too well & it discouraged me from trying them again. I think I might try to incorporate some smaller ones into this bed with a larger shrub in the corner. Oh, the ideas are popping in my head everywhere now!
Oh, I REALLY like this for that corner...especially the "little maintenance" part. I am lucky if I can get my aunt to water the new plants I put in--I told her I was not responsible if they die (AH!) from lack of water. I am so pathetic that I kept watching the weather channel to see if they were getting rain down there
Yes, that would be ideal! That is the type of job I have been searching for here. I haven't lost hope... yet.
Thank you Sharon. They are terrific people (my aunt & uncle) also. Very kind & giving people

Well, I ran out of time last year to find something for this corner. I am going to try to find something tomorrow while I am out shopping for a new landscape bed I am working on next to this one :) I'll have to remember to post what I end up getting!
