My garden is an on-going project- I'm always finding interesting plants that I haven't tried before & I've got so much room that I have places for everything. Our house is in the woods so I have many shade plant borders. These are some of my favorite parts of the gardens. I take care of the 4.5 acres of gardens & woods around the house & the husband takes care of all 6,000+ dahlias!

I have about 75 hydrangeas- Moptop, Peegee, Oak Leaf & Lacecap as well as Ashia & Annabelle. The white one in this picture is Annabelle.

The gazebo is where I veg. out after chasing weeds & slugs & all the other pesky things that invade a shady garden! The husband & son built it for me after I drew a picture & told them that's what I'd like it to look like- they did a fabulous job! A great place to sit & read in the summer. There's a formal rose garden leading up to the gazebo- I know I can't grow roses in the shade, but I try & part of the year they don't look too bad. Wish I could get more sun in the rose garden but the husband likes the trees & he mans the chain saw so no-go!

This is my new-for-this-year pot. I love it but I think it'll have to come inside for the winter so it doesn't get clunked by a falling branch- we get quite a bit of wind in the winter & the sky rains branches!

I've got some more border pictures somewhere in the computer & if I can find them & resize them I'll add them later.

Thanks everyone!
Periwinkle- I haven't posted on Garden Gallery but Poochella did put a lot more of our dahlia gardens in the Dahlia part of Buddies.
I'll try to get more picts. before the heavy rain ruins it all.

I enjoyed Poochella's photos too Cory.
I just thought you'd get maximum exposure on Garden Gallery since it attracts a lot of all-around gardeners.

Cory, your hydrangeas are beautiful! I have a lace cap, its varigated with a pretty blue flower. It was getting too big for it's spot so I tried to cut a few branches back last summer after it bloomed. Nothing grew back from the cut branch...is there something else I should have done? i was disappointed and now am afraid to cut it back. I would really like to get more blooms.

Lesliedon- Did the branches you cut back have leaves on them or did they die right back to the ground? If they had leaves, they'll bloom again next year.
I usually cut the lace-caps back to a leaf node about 3' off the ground. They pretty much bloom the next year because lace- caps bloom on new wood unlike mop-tops that bloom on old wood. Sometimes we'll get an especially bad winter & they'll all die right down to the ground. Then it takes 2 years to have blooms again.
If any of them get too big for their spot I just cut them right back to about a foot from the ground & then it sometimes takes them a year to recover. I have to do this about every three years because we have so much shade that they get WAY tall & flop all over - so I do 1/2 of them one year & 1/2 of them the next year so I always have some in bloom every year. We have about 75 hydrangeas of all kinds- lace-cap, mop-top, oak-leaf, Peegee- is that all- I don't remember! I really like Annabell- the white one in the second picture because she blooms on new wood so I cut her right back every year & she doesn't mind.

Thanks so much for the great advice! I really need to cut it way back and now I won't be afraid. I love the varigated leaves and would like to make it more bushy. Leslie
