They are lovely! I look forward to seeing your others, as well! How stiff are their requirements as to drainage, moisture in general?

Nice plants Pat, such lovely soft colours. It's not a primula I'm familiar with, but look forward to seeing more of them.

They are high alpine plants so good ventilation and drainage are critical. In pots a lean compost with 80% drainage and in a greenhouse with all the windows open all year and a fan to circulate the air works well. The main enemies are botrytis and root aphids but grown like this both are not too much of a problem. They take a fair amount of water while in growth but are kept only just moist in winter. They are very hardy but resent excess moisture at any time. The leaves are very sticky and care should be taken to avoid getting them wet. Other than that, light shade in summer and the best possible light in winter and they will be fine.

Hi Pat, I've found some of your lovely plants on a web site called Ad Hoc plants. http://www.adhocplants.com/ They look so lovely, I'm tempted to try a few....but would hate to fail with them...they sound a bit high maintenance. Do you know why they have sticky leaves? Is it anything like the carniverous plants, that catch flies as a source of food?

No I think it is purely an adaptation to cope with the harsh habitat that they grow in.

How beautiful they are - but I'm not convinced I'm up to the challenge. Thank you for letting us see yours!

They are soooo pretty. How many plants do you have Pat? Have you crossed any yourself to get your own 'forms'.

I have about 60 named forms mostly those raised by Margaret Earle, Brian Burrow and David Philbey. I am content to grow these and far too lazy to raise my own seedlings. There are several hundred forms around but not all are good and many that have been named should not have been. I will post some more as they come into flower. I also grow a far few allionii hybrids which flower a little later and I will post these as well.

Thats quite a collection Pat and all looking very healthy. You obviously have a lot of alpines. Are you a member of the Alpine Society?

That is a sore point and this is not the place to air my views. Yes I am a member but only for the information to be had from the journal. I used to grow a wide range of alpines and was a regular exhibitor at the ags shows. My main interests now are cyclamen and associated bulbs but I keep my collection of primulas going and get a lot of pleasure from them.

Superb plants but I think they are better in an alpine house rather than the open garden.
