Just ordinary potting compost with some fine grit added and a layer of grit over the surface. I haven't watered it all all during the winter but that's because we've had plenty of rain. I think as long as the foliage doesn't sit in wet conditions it'll be fine. This is how mine looked yesterday. I like the little yellow w/white edges 'no-name' one especially but I think they'd be pretty in a mixed planting...particularly with Kesselring. It's the 7th one down. I seem to favor the frosty looking leaves.
