I am a volunteer gardener in the hospice garden and there are many different varieties of bamboo.

I know nothing of where I should prune Bamboo or to care for .

Is there a right or wrong way?

Generally you don't prune bamboo, but you can thin it out, removing entire culms. I think there are some smaller types that can be trimmed like a hedge but in general they are left to grow naturally - and gracefully. As far as I know, anyway. There are so many different kinds of bamboo.

I second Mara's recommendations, though my experience is limited to some of the hardy phyllostachys and fargesias.

It really depends on the variety of bamboo you have. The smaller hedging varieties, especially Shibataea kumasaca, can be clipped like any hedges. The taller varieties, especially the Phyllostachys needs tidying up with culm culling - removing the smaller, older culms (more then 4-5 year old culms). Some varieties can also be top pruned, if that is the desired effect. Then, there is pruning to control - which means digging up any shoots or rhizomes that emerge out of bounds.

Pruning bamboo usually means keeping it under control or removing lower leaves on a culm so as to expose the beauty of the bamboo itself
I have just received a new book by Jake Hobson called Niwaki which is all about shaping trees the Japanese way and deals with pruning bamboos
This is what I mean, although this is a result of my own limited efforts to date
