Another special perennial...false valerian (centranthus) luminous red/pink spikes in front. Very hardy and comes in white too. Real valerian is also lovely..about 4 feet and smells like jasmine.....yes!!!!

Real valerian. Almost as good as jasmine.

You have a beautiful garden, Stephie! Do False and Real Valeria both produces seeds? I'd love to grow some.

Stephie, your garden looks beautiful and I would love to see it better. Can you make your pictures a little larger?

Both plants produce seeds very easily although both do best as seedlings dug up in spring. Centranthus grows everywhere...strangely, my friend can't get hers to live whereas I have them growing out of sidewalk cracks! Valerian is easy too...what you see is from seeds..they can be white flowered or pale pink but still retain their jasmine smell. False valerian has no smell--boo--but makes up for it visually. I don't know why my picture went so small but first try it was too big....goldilocks and the three bears???? Better?

Nice photos. "Real" valerian (Valeriana officinalis) gets well over 6' here.

Hibiscuscrazy: I can't send seedlings due to phytosantitary laws but will collect seeds. They should flower in the second year. Already have your address....the other seeds will be on their way shortly.

Beautiful, Stephie. Now I have to take out some more grass because I think this is another "must" for my garden -- the "real" one with the fragrance, that is.

Yes, and my will power is losing against not buying the rarer purple form....and that's expensive. But, then you always get more seeds eventually LOL!!!

LOL!! Beautiful Stephie. I envy you the tree lupin, I have no room but I do grow the white valerian. The smell in the Summer is wonderful and really wafts around the garden.

Well, finally broke down and bought the blue tree lupine...couldn't resist. Also found another lupine haven't heard about...ever..but a cross with the blue tree lupine. To keep the tree lupines in fine form, after flowering they should be cut back fairly severely....tree lupines can get wrangly and their branches break easily with weight, snow and/or winds. The one drawback (and it isn;t a real problem for me) is they attract the biggest, fattest aphids you ever did see....grey, hairy and you can almost hear them walking! Jurassic aphids I call them. I just run my gloved hand up the stems and it's another extinction event!LOL

How could you resist when they do so well for you. I've never been able to get lupine to flower in my yard. I may try again though since I have the seeds sitting around.

I don't think I would have the will power, Steph. I'd rather have flowers than money - LOL.
