This plant showed up in my garden last spring. Don't remember I acquire it. Can someone tell me its name, and whether it is a weed or not. Thanks for your help.

Just a guess, but some sort of lychnis. I purchased a plant called lychnis viscaria last year. I've yet to see it bloom, but the foliage looks close to what you have. Whatever it turns out to be, it's too pretty to be a weed.

Thanks Chouchou
I check Google Image with the name you suggested, and it appears to match well in plant form and detailed flower look. I think you are right.

I had to zoom to see the flower because at first I thought they were bell-shaped and guessed wood hyacinth but they aren't. Don't have this lychnis myself...and wouldn't mind an invasion!

If it has inflated calyxes behind the flower, it's a silene, possibly Silene dioica. (This is a characteristic of silenes).
It doesn't appear to have that from what I can make out.

The upper flower stems also appear to be dark - if you feel them when it's in bloom this year, they're probably sticky. Anyway, these two things tend to say it's Lychnis viscaria, sticky catchfly (from the sticky stems). No, not normally considered a weed.}

Thanks all. I should have posted a bigger picture to start with. My apology.

Most likely Lychnis viscaria as suggested.

I also had one very similar plant just pop up in my garden, though the flower heads are fuller and more rounded.

Perhaps yours is Silene dioica, with the "fuller and more rounded" flower heads, Twrosz?
