I am sure some GBs have mentioned this plant before but I have never come across it in England. Can anyone give me information on Hibiscus moscheutos? Do you buy the plants or grow from seeds? Are there different varieties? Do you have pictures? Thanks.

I have some of these, I bought them as plants. They are a dwarf type, they only get about 3' high. Jim

Moira I have 3 which I bought as small plants. They grow fast. Beautiful flowers last one day each for several weeks. But they drop off and leave a mess beneath them.

This is another dwarf, it's called Luna Red. I have one of the taller ones but I have to move it to full sun. Yours are beautiful Plantynut.

Moy Grande, Flare and Lord Baltimore are highly recommended. I have Texas Red and Texas White Star hibiscus as seedlings right now...very easy to germinate...they like wet areas but are okay if you give them regular watering. Mind you, they look like giant marijuana so I gotta keep them out of sight of cops and robbers!LOL

Wow! Thanks for the response everyone. Jim, Arlene wonderful shots. I didn't know there were dwarf forms. Thanks for the headsup about the mess they leave Arlene but this shouldn't be a problem in the garden I want to use them in. I find it astonishing that this plant is not offered for sale in the UK. Maybe there is a niche in the market lol! Hans thanks for the link. Is it an American supplier? Have you found any info on there about length of time from seed to flowering plant? Do you have room for this in your garden too? Glad I sparked an interest. It is so unusual and the flowers so enormous. I wonder why it is not sold over here?

Forget all the germination questions I just asked Hans! I missed your post completely Stephie. Does that mean they grow as fast as they germinate? The garden I want one for (maybe more if there are dwarf forms) is the one with the underground springs in it. The info I found on it said it is rabbit resistant and loves boggy ground. What a focal point that big red would be!! A talking point too seeing as I have never seen one being grown here. That is a bit of a worry as I do not want to introduce something that might cause a problem. Is it invasive in anyway? would the birds eat the seeds and speread them? Do they self seed prolifically?
Final question...would I get arrested LOL!! ;)

They are easy to germinate. I usually soak mine first and then sow them warm. They never bloom for me the first year I sow them, but I'm in a pretty cold part of the U.S. Maybe in the gardening paradise that is the UK, you'll get faster results. It is an awesomely showy flower. I wouldn't think that they're in any way invasive, but that's speaking from my zone, where nary a one has self-seeded.

Texas Red & White stars are fast growers and not a species that is invasive or a problem.....no you won't get arrested (LOL) but I live in a part of Canada known for grow-ops, so questions might be asked...not that I care because it isn't a dope plant!! There might be a dope growing it....hahaha!

Hangin' my head in shame here, I have several varieties and planted all the seeds that we got last fall. This plant is a must have for those that are looking for the tropical appearance for sure!!

Has anyone planted kenaf? It's quite tall and am thinking of it...hibiscus cannibas I think it is and there's that marijuana name again...but it isn't related. I saw it somewhere and I know I can get the seeds but don't know if it's worth it.....

I have two varieties of hardy hibiscus both of which were given to me by my cousin when she split hers. I'm not sure exactly what the names are. Some one on here ID them for me last year and I wrote it down but can't seem to locate it now, sorry.

Seil, your's are beautiful. I got this one at Walmart years ago and it comes back every year, blooming nicely. First is the bloom, then showing the bush, which gets about 4' tall and wide. The blooms do look kind of messy but with everything else in this bed they're barely noticeable. Sharon
