Hello,
I am a bit confused here ... Everyone in my are has their caladiums sprouting up and getting tall. All my spring annuals have died back and the summer ones should be sprouting i have columbines, balloon flower, bleeding hearts, elephant ears, and bearded irises growing but none of my caladiums :[ But my neighbors are growing like crazy. I recently dug up a few in the ground and found 1 rotted, and several others half eaten (squirrels, and damn moles,) my ones that are in a sheltered area in the qround and in pots are still hard, but nothing. Any ideas ???!

Franco lets start with correctly identifying your hardiness zone. You are definitely not 8 but rather 5, 6 or 7 depending on where in NJ you live.

Perhaps an exceptionally warm winter in a very sheltered location might allow the bulbs to survive. But you should dig them up or get new ones. These are tropical plants.

Perhaps what you're seeing in your neighbors' gardens are hosta? Or perhaps they were started indoors and have a healthy head start.

I hope this was helpful.

I can't give you too much experience but the one time I started them from bulbs, they took a while to start going.
