These lupines return every year...and I'm especially fond of them because I started them from seed. This is a single plant!

That is a native worth keeping, that's for sure!

That is one great lupine. Mine die after about 3-4 years, but they self seed easily so I'm never without, and that way it's always a surprise what colour it turns out. I started with one purple seedling, but this year I only have a pink:

Beautiful! Slugs ate my seed-started ones. I can only look at your picture with envy.

Same here...some type of disease that broke my heart as they withered away. I have seen them some places (giant hybrids) that are so robust and the picture of good health. Marie, yours are lovely and Friso, I'd be very happy with pink!

Marie - I think at least one of your missing pink ones migrated down here :-)! I never had pink ones before but look what appeared in the front bed the other day:

These really are special. Maybe I should try again. Maybe a new spot. I still have plenty of seed and nothing to lose.

Loretta, they really fill in when other things have not yet bloomed. After alliums but before clematis and roses. :-)

I love to see lupines. They grow wild all over Northern California. They start blooming as early as February at one of the dog parks.

the only one I grow is deep red and is spreading similar to yours. I am letting the stalks go to seed and hope that there will be some new plants or the birds can enjoy.

I'm going to try...I have a few different species though all are a couple of years old. One of them has to still be good at least.

Isn't it so, that blue is the dominant color in lupines? So, they seem to turn blue, most of them. I have wild lupines also and have now grown from seed Russell-hybrids. Some striking lilac ones have now started to bloom.

I love lupines! They are so beautiful! The first and second year in my new house I grew them in the front yard and they looked lovely - then I amended the soil - they did not like that and when I tried them after that they did not do well - I finally decided to try them again this year in the back yard where I do not amend the soil as much and I have a nice red one growing. Not near as big as yours Gardenbug - but hopefully it will get there! Very Nice!!! By the way are they Actual perennials? I thought I had to replace them every year??? Golden

I think lupines are biennial, but they do re-seed beautifully, at least here in Utah. I agree, they're gorgeous plants. I saw a mass planting along the street outside a local nursery of blue, pink, and yellow. It drew lots of customers, I'm sure, including me.

Somehow I missed this thread until today. I love your stand of lupines, Marie, and all the other wonderful photos of lupines here. I had tried and tried to grow lupine plants purchased from nurseries without success. One year, Jodi in Canada sent me some seeds which I planted in one area of my garden. The next year a plant sprouted in another garden about 40 feet from where the seeds were sown! It's returned every year since then - about 4 years now. Evidently, it liked where a bird or squirred dropped it better :) I hope it comes back again next year based on the 3-4 year life span.
