Marlgorzata Sana, I was longing for your daimonjisu! Thank you for this new picture!
You enabled me last year, and I did enable some of my friends in turn!
So far, 4 of them have taken place in my garden, and seem to like it! S. fortunei 'Cheap Confection', 'Rubrifolia', 'Black Ruby', and 'Ruby Wedding'.
But they are very difficult to find, here in France!
I should receive soon, from abroad, two new "babies" : 'Cotton Crochet' and 'Crystal Pink'.

Not only do I love their tiny, delicate flowers, but also their foliage!

Since their are all four planted close to one another, do you think it would be worth trying to sow their seeds?
Did you try yourself? How easy is it to grow them from seed? Any share of your experience would be welcome!
Did you obtain interesting variations?

Zeph, you have some beauties there! The light top pink looks very interesting. I have many pinks (named but please don't ask me to read the Kanji!) but at first glance the blooms look similar to me. Then lemon green, red form that turns pink when "fades", whites... Unfortunately BAD tiny snails made some damage last month to many of my plants but now I think I am on top of the situation. The regular pellets were not enough! Grrr.

I sent all the "dust" to Terry last year and she did manage to get some to germinate!
http://www.gardenbuddies.com/forum/messages/1212584/1270258.html

I have self seedling but it did not show me its face yet. Last year very strong typhoon destroyed all hope for more seed. This year I hope the weather will cooperate! ;)

I also got variegated leaf form this year.

Oh, and a week ago during Sunday hike I did see the species Saxifrage fortunei in the wild! For me those white flowers are the most beautiful.

BDW, I am not the enabler here! MARA is!

Yes, Malgorzata, but, you know, Mara is a serial-enabler anyway!
I was talking about the links you had given here, to some extraordinary daimonjisu, from an exhibition I think.
Congratulations on your own plants, too! The white fringed one looks a white version of "Cheap Confection", and the pink one is really bright!
I just can't imagine showing mine against such a bright blue sky...I would have to dig myself a grave first!!!! I guess these are your potted ones?

I'll try the dust-sowing, then, but I'm afraid I don't have Terry's skills in terms of sowing...
Terry, would you please tell me how and when to proceed? I don't have artificial lights, but a brand new "no-frost" cool greenhouse. Would that do?

Yes, I'm afraid I have a passion for these saxifragas. But some of mine did not do well in this wet summer. There are five in full bloom right now, but I haven't had time for many photos.

Zephirine, a warning about Crystal Pink: it does have the most beautiful foliage of all of them, but it is a very weak grower and even more reluctant to flower. At the same time, they are the most eager to rot - and this wet summer killed off both of mine :-( So, although in general S fortunei seem to like moist conditions, I think Crystal Pink should be given very good drainage and a collar of pebbles or grit around its neck.
(Did you order yours from Peters in Germany?)

Thank you very much for the warning, Mara....I'll take care!
No, I ordered them from a british nursery, as plug plants.

I have already ordered from them, and was satisfied with what I received so far, but who knows...

Richard, where are you? It's your thread! The ladies are taking over!

Zeph, I grow half of my collection in pots. I knew it was sinful to take the pictures of saxifraga fortunei against the blue sky..But I could not resist! ;) We so seldom have such a beautiful sky here...and the saxifragas were asking for their pictures to be taken... ;)

Mara, the species saxifraga fortunei that I have seen in wild always grew with their crown elevated above the soil level. And in dark, dump area. It would be slope or a stone. I also made a mistake planting mine too flat and in September I hurried to fix that. It seems to me the crown likes to be dry. Still learning here.

Checked my little seedling baby. It has a fat flower bud! So it takes only a year from seed to flowering plant! :) Then the doubles are thinking of opening their buds...they bloom later for me.

Richard, do you know the name of your saxifraga fortunei?

Wish I had a better picture of the species.

Malgorzata, my own species S fortunei has grown quite large over the years in spite of its moist position. I think the species is simply very robust and will put up with anything. But some of the cultivars are divas, and in my experience 'Crystal Pink' is the most temperamental of them all.

Zeph, thanks for the link. The prices seem OK, but frankly I couldn't deal with the high-tech web site. In case you aren't familiar with it, look here. They're listed as cortusifolia fortunei "21 Sorten". That's where I've bought mine.

Mara, that's NOT fair!
All right, I give up...I've sent them a message (in very poor german, I'm afraid!)asking (begging?) for their conditions...the site doesn't seem to mention foreign sales...
Hmmmm....'Aya'...'Beni Shishi'...'Mijabi' !!!!
Vielen Dank dennoch, Dame Mara!!!

Mara, Zeph! After seeing the sites you order from I am ready to start the car and speed to the nursery to see what interesting I might find there! ;) Good that I can't order from Japanese sites (too much trouble with the language). S.f. has been around ¥1200 per mature plant this year... expanding the collection from seed seems like a good idea.

Mara, pictures please! Please find a second!

Zeph, I am drooling with you over other plants as well!

Richard thanks for starting the thread!

Today...

OMG Malgorzata! Our flights will cross, because I'm heading to Japan to buy those gorgeous plants! (Dream on...)
OK, I'll take photos later today, when the fog lifts.

Zephirine, I know Peters does ship internationally. But if you can wait till next spring, I'll be very happy to supply you with your saxifraga needs. I've decided not to order or plant anything this autumn. No time, and somehow not in the mood. Peters is always at the spring and autumn plant fair here with a small fraction of his plants (and in spring a fantastic display of entirely unaffordable hepaticas). I like to buy there because even though the selection is nothing like what he sells online, he chooses his strongest plants for the fair.
A warning: GardenBuddy Addict (where is he?) received a number of plants from Peters last year and said that he found some kind of weevil grub in the soil of some. So best to examine before planting - though, to be fair, I have many (very many, too many...) plants from Peters and so far no weevil problems.

It seems I haven't been in the garden for a while (I've really had no time). The species and S rubrifolia, which is very similar to the species, are already finished. Some others at the lowest part of the garden were touched by the frost we had several nights ago and look desolate. So this is all I can offer

I don't know which one this is (my notes are in confusion)

Cheap Confection worse for a touch of frost bite

Rubrifolia, taken in early October

And since I have so few saxifragas to show, here's a Penstemon, still going strong.

I was away for the weekend and look what I missed! I love the photos of all your Saxifraga fortunei. Mine is still growing but I did not get any flowers yet this year. As I only have the one small plant, it will stay indoors. I do have two or four more tiny ones growing downstairs under lights and a few.

Zepherine, Malgorzata's seed came in early January and I sowed them immediately. I believe I put them directly in a cool room under lights, no soil covering them. The pots were put into plastic bags to hold moisture while the seed germinated. I think you may have success in your cool glasshouse.

Mara, thank you for the pictures. What a pity others are finished. :( Oh well...there is always next year! ;) Cheap Confection looks as a very beautiful variety. I need to look for the softer pink. ;)

Terry, I am so sorry your seedling does not have flower buds. :( What did we miss? I checked today with the nursery and also on the internet. "Good drainage and cool temperatures are the point to success. Plant can not stand in water. It has to be flawing water. In nature S.f.often grows between rocks. Less water in dormant period. Once a day in summer. No direct sun in summer. Morning sun in spring and fall. Repotting time: Feb.-March. Fertilize: March-October". The potting mix says: Kanuma, Akadama & Kiriosuna(?). It's like bonsai soil mix.

Red "Miyabi" opened today...
