Hi all,

I was at Wisley RHS gardens today for the Cyclamen Society show.
I forgot to photograph the Cyclamen, but managed to wander and take some photos of the Camellias...
It was a bit chilly in the UK today, about 4C 39F, but there was a pretty good show...
Mainly x Williamsii in flower...Do they only come in shades of pink???
Hope you enjoy...

Thanks for showing these. Camellias always cheer me up, and Williamsii are so exuberant! Since Jury's Yellow is one, I guess williamsii aren't always pink ;-)

I wonder, is 'Jury's Yellow' a Camellia x williamsii hybrid?
I thought that only the direct crosses between C. japonica cultivars and C. saluenensis could bear that name.
'Jury's Yellow' has been described as a 'second generation x williamsii hybrid', and IMHO it has other blood in it (back-crossed to another japonica or to what? I wonder.)
So, to come back to the original question, yes, I think Camellia x williamsii crosses are always pink.
Please correct me if I'm wrong

I'm sure you're right Roger. I've always seen it listed as x williamsii, and never gave it any further thought :-)

Mara, the fact that I'm giving my thoughts here, does not necessarily mean that I'm right

I only have seen all the Camellia's in Summer without flowers. Beautiful.
Thank you for sharing.

Rogervanloon, I am sorry to correct you but there are other colours in the x williamsii, although pink is predominant.

'Auburn White' is a white semi-double.
'E.T.R. Carlyon' is also a large white.
Burncoose nursery, which is owned by the Williams family do claim Drury's Yellow as a williamsii hybrid.

I am lucky enough to live less than 10 miles away from Caerhays Castle which is the home of the Williams family, and looking forward to visiting next week (they open the garden in March for 3 months).

I certainly will Luis, I had to postpone my visit due to terrible weather, but I have time yet they are open until the end of May.

Hi Dawn (Deeds),
Thanks for your mail (I was late reading it).

As said: I'm giving my opinion, I don't claim to be always right.
But I seriously wonder if those cultivars are really true x Williamsii hybrids (with Camellia saluenensis as one of the direct parents - no second-generation or open pollinated crosses).
Do you know their exact pedigree? (I don't have the Register, perhaps it is given there).

I have grown pink, red, and white camellias, but have never seen the yellow one. They also product both single and double flowers. I can't grow them here in Utah because it's too cold, but they're just gorgeous shrubs.

I just found this, which may help:

Sorry for so many posts here - especially since I'm certainly not an expert on the subject and only grow camellias for a short period of time.
