I recently acquired my third camellia 'Desire' and noticed that the color of the flower is much more pink than the one I acquired three years ago. This is my three year old plant, photo taken today.

Photo of new plant, taken today.

I do not like the darker pink one and I hope that it will settle down and look more like my other one. I seem to recall that my older plants were a darker pink also when they first came. Could it be what they feed them in the nursery or change of soil conditions possibly? I much prefer the softer, more subtle shade.

I think the colour difference does have to do with the nursery conditions and it will change in your garden temperatures and light.

Thanks Mara. I first saw this camellia in a large public garden and was struck by the soft, subtle beauty of the flowers. If it had looked anything like this new plant, I would have just said, 'not for me'. Now I am looking forward to next year's blooms with fingers crossed.

That's a real beauty, Jane. I wish I could grow camellias here in northern Utah.

Thanks Gloria. They do really well here in the right spot. I must admit, we are fortunate to be able to grow them.

I think plants often find their own way in a particular garden after being grown in a nursery. However I hope you learn to love your new flowers!
