This is my newest camellia: alba simplex (a japonica). Most people seem to look for double camellias so I was glad to find this classic single one at a garden centre.
Paul Jones Supreme is starting up now and yes, both flowers are produced by the same plant :-)

Mara, You are not the only one who loves single camellias. I hope I can speak freely (no offense?) I think most of the Camellias, available in garden centers - and from nurseries - are the apex of bad taste. IMHO, a flower should look natural - a display of petals and stamens. I am eliminating most camellias from my garden who do not live up to those standards. What can be more beautiful than those single ones?
Now all in flower in my garden (with many more)

All of these are beautiful but in both of your postings, I really love the whites. Your first picture, Mara, is particularly sculptural. I am experimenting with a couple of hardy camellia this year. After hemming and hawing about an hour at the nursery, I decided it is the center of the camellia that is truly beautiful and identifying. That is not to say I am not above owning a double. Here is April Blush. Would you consider this a semi-double?

I agree with you entirely. And with this, too:
Roger you must have the ideal camellia climate! They all look happy and healthy - and very beautiful. The pink being my favourite, of course. I intend to plant my new one out, but I know that after a very cold winter (and we do have them every once in a while) there will be no flowers. But I have no more space to accommodate another large pot. Loretta, April Blush is lovely! Is it one of the new Ackermann super hardy types?

Mara, I love your new Camellia! One can not have them all in a small garden so I personally love to have those with fragrance.

Fragrance would be nice but I will just be happy if I get them to flower again in my zone. So far, I have my doubts. One was misplaced under a leak in my gutter and is not too happy at the moment. Mara, by the description on the Camellia Forest website here in the US, they describe the April Series Camellias in a general statement as some introduced by Ackerman and some by them so I don't know for sure. I think of it as one of Dr. Ackermans. I have a white one too. If I find the picture, I'll post.

Gorgeous, I never really cared for camellias until I discovered the singles.

Mara and Roger, I like the single camellias too. You have beautiful single flowers.

Well I must be on the apex of bad taste then (although I would never accuse anyone of bad taste - each to his own), I love all Camellias, but especially the doubles.

Dawn, you're absolutely right and I apologise for suggesting that any one preference is proof of better taste than another. I have become very fond of single camellias, but I have a number of doubles as well - and they are also beautiful.

No offense taken Mara (sometimes I wish this site had smilies, as there would have been one at the end of my message). I too have lots of doubles, but many singles which are beautiful. I will try and post some photo's later in the week.

I love all camellias. Mine are just starting into bloom. The singles have a certain charm. I find I'm leaning towards simpler flowers these days, same with peonies. Lovely examples here.

Hello Roger, is this one o.k.? I got the seed in 1992 from bot. garden Düsseldorf. After 15 years here is the first flower:
