Thanks very much Mary. I belong to a group which is starting to plant out a Medieval style garden, and I collect many of the herbs used in Medieval times. My book is about those herbs http://www.gardenbuddies.com/forum/messages/1228646/1229148.html but I also collect information on garden structures of the time. Sounds like they have some lovely ones there. Will forward your link to interested people.

The interested peoples were very interested, but much discussion about how a Middle Eastern Ziggurat comes to be in a Tudor garden!

Very interesting link. Are there any updates on how successful they've been in preserving the site? I am fascinated by mazes and wonder if any pictures of it are available.

"And ultimately I would like for it do be restored so that local people can go there to enjoy and learn about the history of the place." That would be great!

Mary, you are right - it was interesting. We (Gill and I) walk a lot (whenever we can) and after seeing this thread I read up about the site and we decided to drive there last weekend. Gill loves the walking anyway, I was struck on seeing the site particularly. From Manchester it is only 90 miles. I managed to find a good walk, near Llanrwst, and we decided to do the walk first then go and see the ziggurat after. Now, a quite amazing thing happened next...

Well....we were at the beginning of the walk, and I had, as usual, printed the walk route details to refer to, along with the text and pictures about the ziggurat from the link above. You'll recall that on the link above there is reference to 'The cleared grounds lie behind the old family chapel at Gwydir Uchaf and local historian, Gwyn Jones from Llanrwst Historical Society, has called for the site to be excavated.' Gill and I were struggling to find the initial starting point for the walk, we just could not figure it out from the map and printed notes. Cemetery, yes, Nebo Road, yes....but NO path leading off to where we wanted to go!! After five minutes of looking like a couple of lost sheep, someone came up to us and tapped me on the shoulder. 'Hello', he said, 'that's my material you have there - where on earth did you get it?' Yes...by a one in a trillion chance Gwyn Jones himself, the author of the story above, had bumped into us and recognised his maps and pictures, from the other side of the road. 'My fault you are lost...I must add the other cemetery onto the map!! It's a bit confusing, and you have to start over there!' We then received chapter and verse from Gwyn himself about the walk (his work too), the chapel, the gardens, and everything! He gave us pin-point directions to the chapel and garden and off we set, to walk.
I was 50 a few months ago (can't believe it) but of course, boys will be boys, so here I am, splitting rocks, looking for fossils:
I am a very lucky man
Greeted at the entrance to the chapel. They followed us every step of the way.
The chapel Erected in.......
We found the gardens, greens, and ziggurat. It was all completely fascinating. I couldn't take a picture of the entire ziggurat as it was impossible to frame it, but this is from within, looking back down onto the chapel:
The spiral hedging begins at a level just about on a par with the base stones of the chapel and as you wind your way around the hedges you begin to ascend steadily; at the peak you can see more or less from the level of the roof of the chapel, away into the beautiful lush green valley pastures, rolling hills and forested welsh countryside. It must have been a great look-out point in days gone by. Wales is a place of completely outstanding natural beauty. I don't need to tell you, we had a wonderful day. http://www.britannia.com/celtic/wales/ http://www.wales-calling.com/culture.htm
