I think Matthias might be more interested in this than others. I have a niger that has about 60% flowering stems with 2 flowers on and about 40% with 3. The flowers were into carpel ripening by the time I took these so apologies.

Yes, Mike, that is interesting, because it is rather rare in cultivation. Most H. niger I see in local flower shops around Christmas here and in garden centers in February have these typical one-flower-stalks. But, as you may know, there are wild populations in north Italy where most plants have two flowers and some have three flowers per stalk. Here is an example; photo taken north of Como on Jan.03, 2007.

Matthias, thank you for your nice photo of the example. As you know, I am going to join the tour to northern Italy to see H. liguricus. I also hear that we will probably see so called bi-floral H.niger there. I believe that it is what you said above. I look forward to seeing them soon.

That's really interesting. I have a double slate grey one (small flowers, but lots of them) with very dark foliage that displays the same characteristics, except that every stem has multiple blooms. I have no idea of the parentage as the seeds were a gift from Tim some years ago. I must say every plant from the selection of seeds he sent me had been beautiful. I'm now flowering the 2nd generation, lovely every one.

Mike Many years ago I received niger seed from an Australian source which came labelled as niger macranthus. The seed was open pollinated but the grower only grew this form of niger. The plants I raised from the seed do produce more than one flower per stalk, although I have never seen more than two per stalk. Upon checking in the now old Rice & Strangman book they refer to niger macranthus growing only in northern Italy, although it may cross the border into Slovenia. With reference to your plant(s) and more recent collections of niger from northern Italy are we talking about the same sub species?

In the tour 2008 to northern Italy, we could see bi-floral niger in Como near Switzer-land. Lake Como is one of the most beautiful sight-seeing places that I have ever seen. The first photo is the one which I took out of a window of our bus. I hear that a lot of celebrities from all over the world have their villas at the lakeside of Como. The bi-floral niger in the second photo is located at Comune di Carlazzo near Como which has an altitude of about 500 meters. But, unfortunately it was too late to see the flowering H.niger there. We should have visited there three weeks earlier.
