Kevin at Ashwoods claims to have crossed foetidus with niger but I have never seen the plant. I have tried crosses without success.

One of my favorite weeds. It does so well for me that I am trying to germinate a few species now. Except for one plant, the hybrids are never vigorous for me.

They always bring a few early bees here...

It must be wonderful to find them growing wild.

That's exactly what I was thinking also. Walking in the woods or forests is a lovely thing to do, and to find a wild speciman like this would really be a treat.

I use empty prescription vials or old film canisters to store seeds, but of course they are not handy enough to leave in the garden to collect seeds as they fall. What a great concept. I have never seen unused tea bags around here, but I'll check in the Asian markets.

If you can't find the unused tea bags use a bit of cheesecloth or a piece of old pantyhose. I think anything that will let some air through and catch the seed will work.

You hardly every find such masses of seedlings in the wild: too much competition of other plants.

I always thought this plant could have the potential to escape in the woodlands if enough people planted it.

Great markings on your flowers. That's what I am looking for.

Loretta, you are absolutely right, foetidus, like other hellebores, can escape if the conditions are favourable. What I was saying is that you don't find the masses of seedlings as in Joseph's photo.

Matthias, I see in your pictures that your woodlands have a denser understory. That is not the case here with the deer overpopulation but it does surprise me that there are no patches of hellebores where they live.

Terry, I'm not sure if your addressing the red rims on mine but that has to do with the cold. Flowers that develop early will get kissed. Otherwise the plants are green as you can see here.

Wow! Look at all those seedlings. Wonderful photos Loretta. Love the one with the bee. I like the affect of the cold on your hellebores too. I have not seen that before.
