Snow tonight ... but the sun luckily finished that nonsense very quickly! Here are a few first photos of species specimen examples grown from wild collected seed. They are all what is presently called Croatian/Bosnian H. torquatus.

What beautiful plants Matthias. I love the colouring on the flowers of the 3rd and 4th photo. The foliage is so lovely too.

Wow I have to agree with Denise! I love the color combination of the 3rd and 4th flowers, too. The contrast is very striking but they are not too flashy. I am very interested in this species because I love the combination of dark purple and green, and especially the purple veining inside the sepals. However there seems to be lots of variation in H. torquatus, and I'm trying to figre out whether to put this one on my wish list, as opposed to H. atrorubens or H. croaticus which look similar to me... (I would love to all of them, though.) Is there any one of the three that's more likely to consistently have that nice veining, I wonder? Or does it vary with each plant, I guess?

Matthias, they are stunning. I love the flower buds and especially veined H.torquatus. I think it is quite special.

It's always amazing how colour contrasts are represented on different monitors. While I optimize photos on my calibrated monitor at home the contrast in pic 3 comes out much stronger on the monitor I'm working at at the moment. So, I'm afraid we all see the photos a bit differently: Long live books! More pics will follow after my spring trip to 4 Balkan countries starting this coming Saturday. Mike, when will you be going?

Matthias, Stunning plants, excellent photography, thanks for sharing. Pictures 3 and 4 do it for me... Of the species, how long have they taken from seed to flowering?
