My Garden

As some of you know, these days I am physically away from the garden for much of the year. This time of year is particularly difficult, as hellebores are beginning to fade while other spring flowers take the stage... my favorite time of year. My beloved mother made a trip out to the garden to pull off a few flowers and send me some photos. It warmed my heart.
The story: Some years ago, when my interest in hellebores was gaining in intensity, I was looking for seeds from all over the world. I wrote a letter to Gisela Schmiemann and included $5 for a seed catalog. Some time passed, and I received a hand written letter from her saying that her crop had failed due to poor weather; therefore, she was unable to offer a seed list. However, included in the envelope were a small number of seeds. I sowed them, transplanted them to a random spot, and proceeded to focus on other things. Out of perhaps two dozen plants, half turned out 'excellent' and the rest were very good (the greatest percentage of quality plants of any seed source I have ever encountered). The second flower above with gold, red-tipped nectaries is indicative of the general quality of that batch (it is not even exceptional in that context). I plan to always keep those plants, if for no other reason that they have a story. :-)

Absolutely! How wonderful too to have a guardian of your plants in your mother. How sweet of her.

What beautiful hellebores you have! I can sympathize with your disappointment at not being with them.

I remember two years ago (?) you had your "special friend" posting pictures and it turned out to be your Mom. I was so touched by that, and this post does the same.
